Importing a bike, what do I need to do?

Ok, I have the opportunity to pick up a good priced Ducati or Harley here in Saudi. They ride em around here for a year or two and then flog them off at a ridiculous price. I mean real cheap. Generally they wind up in the hands of the Philipino mafia who ship them back home. But I have found a few that have escaped a slow Manila death that are rather attractive. So I'm gonna grab one. They are all original having being spec´d for either the Euro or Yank certification and are on Saudi plates.
Anyone out there done this sort of thing before? So what do I need paperwork wise to bring it into New Zealand smoothly and how many hoops do I need to jump through once I get it there and how much can it cost?

Havibg just imported a bike myself you will need paperwork that is proof of ownership , price paid etc for duty payment , bill of lading from freight company . Get a customs agent they will sort out customs/ maf etc for a small fee - thats well worth it . You also need the proof of purchase paper (cant remember what they called it ) for compliance . Stick with stock as they will go straight thru

Don't forget to take into account Shipping costs and GST. You pay GST on the bike and the shipping costs. Its about $700 to ship a bike on a car carrier from Japan to NZ, so probably more from Saudi. Could be cheaper if you take it apart and put it in a crate so that it can be loaded on to a container with other cargo.

One way to ship bikes without the hassle of taking them apart is to buy a cheap flat bed truck or van, buy several bikes and load them up on to the truck, then ship the truck with a car carrier. That way the shipping will cost you for the truck, plus only a small amount for each bike you put on to it, so you lower your shipping costs per vehicle. Of course you have to hope that you can sell the truck and the bikes you don't need for a decent price here in New Zealand, and recover your costs or even make a bit out of it.

And - you didn't hear this from me, but see if you can get the seller of the bikes to give you an invoice showing a cheaper price on it - then you can show that invoice to nz's customs and pay less GST.

Lastly - don't know if Saudi has gst or similar, but since you're buying bike for export you may be able to claim back any saudi gst component of the purchase price from saudi customs.
