Well for the sake of a balanced argument (and the challenge of rooting for the underdog!!!) I can't see any problem with this. All the guy is suggesting is that someone send the KiwiRider mag a mail promoting this site and what it can offer people. However somewhere along the line this message has been misinterpreted as a "WE ARE GOING TO TAKE OVER YOUR SITE, INVADE IT WITH OUR READERS AND PLASTER IT WITH ADS!!"
A lot of us only found this site purely by chance or maybe word of mouth and I would say that Kiwibiker site has only reached a fraction of the NZ Motorcycling community and would only benefit from more members. Think about the solo biker with no riding mates, people in remote places or others just getting onto the internet. Sure with twice as many members you may get double the spam and double the idiots but you will also get double the new mates, double the rides/events/news/reports and double the deals!!
When making a decision you can't just consider the worst possible outcome - to put things into perspective you also have to consider the best possible scenario as well. Once you know the extremes then you know your outcome will lie somewhere between the two and allows you to quantify the risk vs reward element.
With change comes "fear of the unknown" and it is human nature to resist it in favour of the safe comfortable environment we already have. However if it weren't for the bold few that overcame these fears in the name of progress, man would still be living in caves.
Sure there are downsides to growth but these downsides need to be addressed and resolved for the sake of moving forward as opposed to "not even trying at all". Steps have already been made to address the idiot problem i.e. moderators and likewise I'm sure any other problem can be similarly resolved by the KB problem solving machine.

As for the topic in question. I'm of two minds. Yes it would be nice to see some more quality KBers.
But...
Having also been a member on a few forums, I know the price that is payed. Two I'll use as examples are both tech forums. OCNZ and Slashdot. In both cases, with the popularity came the influx of tards (stupid people who can't help themselves, these one's post the same question in multiple threads - generally a question which has been asked a thousand times before and the answer of which they could easily find by doing a simple search), and trolls.
Now it very much wasn't a case, in either example of the percentage staying the same but the numbers increase. It was a case of the percentage of each increasing.
The reason for this being two fold, the increase of noise put off the "old timers" who including myself would post less and less, and/or leave, it also caused a lot more retaliation from everyone (ie. telling people to STFW or piss off troll, etc).
Now I'll read the news on /. but don't go into threads and haven't in about 3 years. I left OCNZ, although stay in touch with a lot of the old timers. Initially I left as I found myself reading less and less, and that which I was reading was making me angry (due to the trolling, etc).
Not saying this would happen to KB. But definitely something to keep in mind. It does seem to happen to a LOT of forums when they become popular. SomethingAwful is another example. All the forums try to combat it in some manner but what was once been is then lost.
Word of mouth I think is the best, with obviously a certain amount of stumbling in from google (how I got here).
Some would say that it's enivitable(SP?) anyway, active promotion or not. I hope not though, as I really like it here.
In conclusion, meh, either way.![]()

Would anyone like to put together a write-up for the site? How many words danger_dave? Maybe everyone can post things they would like to see in it and we can put something together.
I don't see why we should keep others from enjoying the advantages of being part of the KB site just because we want to keep it to ourselves.
If thats what the Boss says...... then I change my mind (good post Hoon) I'm with you SM, after all its him and the other Mod's that have to do the hard work around here.Originally Posted by SpankMe
