Never had any probs at petrol stations until I went to a mobil in Manurewa - wanted to fill my car - told them that and was given the response "prepay only". I answered with the obvious "but I don't know how much it will take" but they wouldn't budge. Kept getting the "prepay only, prepay only" like a friggin' cracked record. In the end, I needed the gas so I said "well in that case I'll have $20 instead of letting you fill my empty car". Would have been so much more satisfying to say stuff ya then you won't get my business again but I really needed that petrol! When another woman who was in the kiosk commented to the guy at the counter that they must lose a lot of business over it he simply said it was company policy with all the petrol thefts that have been occuring.
The obvious solution to the drive-off's is eftpos at pump. Why would a station do away with it unless it is costing them more to have an eftpos terminal on each pump???
It solves the drive off issue. Have an attendant on the forecourt assisting people who are not familiar with the system.
It might even bring back the concept of "service"?
Hang on! I bet they are losing sales of chokky bars/coffee/and CD's inside the shop... = force the punters inside to pay.
Bastards!

For my own bike I know roughly how much it will take an a pre-pay, but for the test bikes it's quite frustrating having to nominate.
Most operators are good too - but the way the Mobil shop at greenlane is designed, the poorest view and furthest point from the pumps is exactly where the staff stand.

>>It's the new chip-card Credit cards that are the problem, <<
ahh - got it. I take some of it back. Will still go elsewhere though. Advantage lost and absolutely definitely 100% not interested in another credit card.
