    Talking First memories of motorcycles

    OK ..

It suddenly hit me tonight at work, that my very first memory of a Motorcycle, or any motorcycle for that matter .. is of Dad driving over the centre line up the mountain and pushing an oncoming motorcylist into the ditch

I remember the motorcyclist got up and was not hurt but my dad didnt even stop .. shouted some obscenities about not watching where he was going etc etc etc .. ummm .. upon reflection and my mothers input .. Dad was the inconsiderate arse who knocked him over

As no one in my family rides .. or .. is even remotely interested in motorcycles I slightely wondered where my interest came from .... and Im still working it out lol .. whats your first memory of a Motorcycle?

The old lady did a runner when i was 6 so the old man restored an old 650SS Norton in the lounge, vivid memories of him hand polishing cases for hours.

Red Hunter chained up under the house - it was sad to look at it,so powerful and imposing, but neglected and dusty.I just knew it wanted to get out and run down the road as fast as it could.....

Yes, but Mrs Hunter wasn't about to let him loose again. Not after what happened the last time. Running down the road is all very well, but there are certain social propierties that Red failed to observe.

1980,6 years old, gravel road, YZ80 MX bike, Couldn't reach the foot pegs, Had no concept of clutch, gears or brakes, The oldman has me sitting on the tank, gets her fangin along in third, Grab the throttle boy he yells, and then steps off the back of bike.

First real lesson followed within seconds, Gravel roads hurt like fuckery.

Have also seen a bunch of pics from the seventies where I was perched on either my Dads or my uncles Triumphs for the sake of taking a photo, Though I have no recollection of it happening, Though to be honest I remember fuck all of nothing from when I was 3......

Uncle rode/still rides I think (never plucked up the courage to get on the back), Dad used to ride, but before I became a twinkle.

First memory is probably being in some car as a kid, in the country, bike comes up behind, watch it's suspension working, it breezes past, disappears into the distance... cool

Grandfather still rides occasionally. Some may remember him blatting around Taupo couple years ago on my GSXR thou on his 80th birthday.
Old man still rides as well.

Growing up in the country, visiting friends etc. monkey see, monkey do.

First bike I learnt to ride was an old yellow trike.

Got taught by a couple of farmers how to wheelie, jump logs, swamps etc in my early teens. Handy skills to have.

I still prefer dirt to tarmac. Grass tastes better.

Pillion (behind the old man)on a BSA Spitfire, up Ngaio Gorge, sometime in the early 1960s. Pretty sure it had a red tank.

My big brother persuading my mum to try out his Suzuki 125. "Just twist the throttle to go" he said but unfortunatley mum wrung it's neck, wheelied across the back yard, ended up on her arse and has never been on a bike since.

On the farm there were always neighbouring farmers bikes around, but probably the first time I heard about bikes, was from my Dad who would regale us with stories about his younger years... Funny though, that Dad was the only farmer around who never had a bike! My older brother bought one soon after getting his first job and we all blasted around on that... A Honda XR250. bro!

A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

First memory is of Dad telling the story of being pillioned Welly to Aucks on an AJS 500 single. It was early 1950s, winter, freezing and pissing with rain/sleet - they went into the ditch at Rata north of Bulls but all ok - arrived in Aucks after 15 hours on the road. Dad took the train back....
He's 77 now and still won't get on a bike.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
