Partial truth will save the day.
Tell him your no longer in a position to buy the bike, and ask him to remove your bid.
No need for details, or pretending to die.....

I also side with the "congratulations on your new bike" crowd however, you could always hope that he doesnt make contact within the requisite 2 days (new rule in the last couple of weeks). After the time has expired you can legitimately claim that no contact was made therefore no notice in your feedback regarding uncompleted trade.
I had this happen to me but I waited a week with no reply to emails from a seller, gave a deadline of contact by Sunday night, Monday morning got the email back from them. Sorry too late buddy, have since purchased elsewhere. Got the "Please explain" from Trademe, told the tale and violα no bad comment about being a buyer in an uncompleted trade.
Alternativly, just be honest, a fair percentage of traders are understanding and he may just be happy with his listing fee refunded by you.
Ah just buy it, I hate tyre kickers & time wasters, if you dont like the bike you can relist it your self, maybe one of the local KBers could go check the bike out for you, if ya ask em nice that is, then you could fly up and ride it back.
Be honest with the guy. Its a contract. Ask yourself how you'd feel if you were the seller.....? He may be fine about it but if not, hey you got a new bike. You can always sell it again. A deal is a deal. You'll feel better for being upfront that trying to weasel out. We all gotta live with ourselves.
Geez... what happens if the poor bugger selling the bike is a KB'r and he comes into this thread and realises whats happening???
He (the seller) hasnt done anything wrong, even relisting is a pain in the ass once you think you've sold something. I would hate to be treated with such disregard.
Dude, put yourself in his shoes and then treat him how you would want / expect to be treated.

DuuuuuCaaaaaaTiiiiiiiiiiii
For $2700 you could do a lot worse than a Spada.
Congrats on your first bike. I had regrets about my Ducati I bought sight unseen on TM. I had a short circuit in the electrics, a hole in the engine and 2 busted cables (speedo and rev counter) swallowed my pride made the repairs and have a sweet ride that I won't part with!
It's all good - karma - meant to be - Spadas are neat.
In space, no one can smell your fart.
face the music, just think if someone did that to one of your auctions wouldnt you be pissed?
once you bid you own it im sure you agreed to trade me terms and conditions
I've learnt to hide the pain inside, open the throttle and ride away.
You have already been a bit silly (to be polite), don't be a weasel as well.
That said, I see no reason to not be straight with the seller and ask if he will remove your bid or cancel the trade.
I know I wouldn't force a trade if the buyer really didn't want the item and requested an out.
dont be a dick, you bought it you own it
