For the 2-smoke riders (Honda mainly)

    Hey guys,

What expansion chamber do you run on your 250 two stroke? I'm just in the process of choosing an expansion chamber for my latest bike (05 CR250). Possibly looking at an FMF Gnarly pipe, bit more low/mid range torque and they're aparently stronger then the other pipes.

Your bike, pipe, style of riding and your opinion on the pipe (also if you've done any other main mods to make your monster a bit more user friendly)

I'l be doing mainly MX and trail (would like to get into a bit of Cross country riding too)

A Gnarly and Fatty are the same, teh Gnarly just used thicker metal so is heavier and stronger.

I love my Fatty pipe, same hates his one cause he keeps cracking it. So go for a Gnarly. Make sure that you get a muffler too.

I use a Bills Pipe for the expansion chamber on the RM250 used for everything, woods, MX etc, a good spread of power everywhere when used with the stock muffler. The Bills shorty was too noisy and took away from the top end. The stock pipe had too much of a narrow hit.
Be aware that the Honda engine is the weaker of the big 5 in that period, everyone can flame all they like but its a fact. It might still suit what you want to use it for but if you want more power your gonna need to switch.

Twice the displacement, twice the cost and a decibel problem, I'll pass on the inside brraaaap!!!

yea i have a fatty shorty combo on my 06, goes mean, unfrotunately i bought the bike 2nd hand with the pipe on it, and it had a repair in the pipe allready and appears to be a little bent as well, which i guess causes the metal to be stresses, so it keeps splitting on the tight bend in the left side of the bike, however i keep getting it welded because i know how much better it is than a standard one.

in saying that cheese crashes all the time and his never has a problem, but if i were to buy another one id be buying the gnarley

youll be amazed how much power the fmf pipe will give you, comparing a standard to an FMF on a cr250 is no comparison. the bottom to mid especialy takes a huge leap.

TBH this bike standard is already fast enough for me so the power issue is non-existant I'm coming from riding a 250F so as you can imagine the 250 2t will be limit-less.

Couldn't bring myself to buy a yellow bike in the end

I've got a DEP on mine, but it was already on there when I bought the bike so can't compare before and after. Compared to most other 2T's I've ridden, mine normally has more up top but less down low. It's got a couple of dings in it now but all in all it handles crashes pretty well.

Can't say I've done any mods to make it more user friendly, I kinda like it the way it is. It's got enough down low for pretty much any suitation, and then when your ready to let rip then she's all go.

I have to admit that I did think about adding a flywheel weight, but then I decided I'm not a soft cock after all.

I think that you will find that the gnarly is designed to give more bottom and mid but they do tend to sign off on the top!
I have had both on various bikes and would recommend the gnarly!!

The weakest powerband, not reliability, sorry for any confusion.

I was under the impression that the YZ and KX were the weakest while RM and CR are were the bikes with more bite from the factory

OK saying the Honda had the weakest powerband is not really correct. Look up just about any 2 stroke shootout from 2005 and the Honda's engine has been improved from earlier years and does not lack horse power but its generally rated last for engine performance due to a weak low end. This is where a lot of us need more power, especially those of us that use these bikes off road (isn't that all they are used for these days)? Take what you like out of bike tests however, if the Honda suits you just enjoy it. A different pipe might help the bottom end. My mates '05 CR250 has an FMF gnarley I think it is, perhaps a fatty. While it may have improved the bike it does not have the instant down low grunt or throttle responce that my '05 RM250 has.
Didn't mean to jump on anyones toes and my first post was probably unwarranted in the context of this thread.
