Re-registering my bike

Hi,

I picked up an 2005 GSX250 that was damaged and was an insurance write off. Bent forks and smashed instrument panel and no fairings left is all really..

Still I have fixed everything up and even tho it is now two colours it is ready for a new vin number.

Trouble is that I spoke th the guy at VTNZ and he said i need the reason it was written off from the insurance company or an accessors report or something like that, couldnt quite understand him. He said without one of those i am stuffed.. I dont know the insurance compay it came from either and doubt i will be able to find out either.

Now can anyone tell me what and who I should go to see or speak to about getting an accessors report or whatever i need to get myself on the road...
Any advice will be greatly appricated. (sp)

You need to get it certified to say it is running straight and true (the frames/forks etc).

Frosty's mate Alex can do it for you, otherwise F1 engineering in Hamilton can do it. Expect to pay about $200+ for it.

go to vtnz and ask for a vir on the bike this gives you the history of the old vin number from there you should be able to find out the insurance company that put the bike on the write off register

Most insurance companies won't play ball I recommed Gil in Hamilton did a great job on 1 of my bikes.

Will try the vir first as it is only $30 as opposed to a couple of hundred. and if i have to go the way of the accessor then i have only lost $30 which in the scheme of things isnt much.

Will go visit VTNZ tomorrow while I am waiting for the girlfriend to have another job interview or if i get bored at work and just feel like going out...

Hey mate, I'm doing exactly the same thing as you, except with a CBR250. I really do reccomend Alex (as somebody else has suggested) to do the assessor's report. He is a great guy and definately knows his stuff, and has a lot of gadgets to measure the bike. I will PM you his phone number if you want. Just a heads up, you will have to get a brake test done, which measures the thickness of each rotor, the minimum thickness is stated somewhere on the rotor (or at least is on mine). If the frame is bent, which is SUPER likely since the forks are bent, you might have to get it bent back into place, which you can pay to have done (Alex will supply you with business cards) or you can do it yourself, which I have just done.

All the legal fees and checks etc adds up to around $600-650. That doesn't include buying parts or anything, it's things that you MUST do to get it back onto the road. Tough luck, isn't it?

You can go to any NZ post shop and it costs about $12 bucks.

I just did the carfax check and it doesnt mention the insurance campanys name, so will have to get Alex's details and give him a call.
Not in any hurry, having spent my "allowance" on parts i have been informed no helmet until after payday anyway. She is an evil taskmaster...

Lets hope it isnt bent, the forks wernt to bad... but all the fairings were rooted and the instrument panel...

One of the interesting things is that it tells me it has 26.8hp... mmmm it will have to work hard to drag me about... Still i like it and I have fixed it all by myself... lets hope it doesnt need too much more. I have about $600 set aside for registration and such like and would like to stay within budget..
I am already in trouble for finishing my 3 month fix a bike project in 2 days....

You never know what to expect with a write-off, well, any bike these days. The damage was to the front, and somehow the swingarm was bent. Alex reckoned it was from a previous crash that was never fixed properly, tough luck. Let's hope that your bike will be on the road in no time, and we can all hope the same for mine!

R6 squid is right. See alex from norwest motor mechanics he is excellent and then use ashley at the aa compliance centre( 09 966 1150) unit 209 on archers rd. Alex is awesome and I have put three bikes(rite off, re reg) past him in the last year no problems. Ashley can give you alex number if you call him.
