It'll sell for close to that I reckon.

Stick it in a shed and the value will increase a shit load if ya register it and put it on hold.

I road my rgv in to honda city in lower hutt many a year ago and took a lucky strike one of these for a ride. went up the road round the round about and took the guttless piece of shit back.

To be honest I wouldnt piss on that if it were on fire. He must be a P head to think he is going to get that sort of $ for it.

so now he thinks hes a dealer in all things rare and two stroke.Last time i was in there he had an RZ 500 at for sale, which was admittedly pretty tidy.

Truth is the reverse cyl TZR250 was a mistake by Yamaha which prompted the importer at the time,Moller Yamaha,to release a kit which was meant to stop the things from seizing and also make them go fast enough to beat the then king of the hill,Suzuki's RGV 250.They failed on both counts, and the Suzuki won all the races that counted.

Yamaha got it right with the V Twin model that came after it though, now theres a bike.......

    A) Well if he imported it from Japan and paid NZ$1500 for it then it's gone up in value (for him).

    B) Perhaps he confuses 'value' with 'price'

I don't blame you. Back in the day I test rode a couple of two-strokes to see if I was interested in one. One of them was this TZR. I can confirm that the NSR250 I rode impressed me a whole lot more than the TZR I rode on the same day. In fact, I was quite surprised by the TZR's comparative lack of power.

I wouldn't buy one to ride at any price. And if I was buying for an investment I'd be looking to pay less than $3500 privately. Being a dealer, maybe it would be reasonable for him to ask 5k in my opinion.

There are a lot of overpriced bikes on trademe and from people who have been into dealerships who think they're going to be able to charge the same.

I was following 11 or so auctions before I found my bike, only 1 actually sold. A lot get relisted over and over.

Also seems you get a MUCH better deal if you buy outside of Auckland. I finally got mine from a dude in Hamilton, and the further south you go the better the prices.

Well he would have to say that to save face... why is the ad still there then? Whats a bet the ones hes got coming are EXACTLY the same - and that will just be coincidence if you bother to ask him. Truth is its overpriced, unreliable, and old... and he knows it.

I remember well when these things came out. A whole bunch of us 250 proddy guys waited till bloody close to nats start for em to arrive.
The problem we had was we all got the low powered Jap market model TZR rather than the "rest of the world" bikes.
Yamahe dealerships then were busy trying to get the HP out of the new bikes for us.
You'd get the HP then the bike would seize -so you'd back things off a bit. and they'd be slower than the old TZR's
BUT that said the seizing up was ONLY after we tried in vain to get full HP out of them --in the factory Jap (slow) spec they were pretty reliable.

Meh it could go for that figure.
I had a mitsi sapporo for a few years, fantastic car - but i could not believe the value it was worth as a collectors item.
Here i was, poor student with a mint condition one sitting in the shed.
In the end i swapped it for cool ZXR. But while in Japan i got to go to a 'classic' car dealer.
Over there your all fancy if you have the original Fiat 500 or a Austin Healey. You keep you orginal showroom condition 1960's Mazda Cosmo in the shed - as its worth too much money to drive.
Likewise buying a Triumph 650 Bonnie in Kyoto was like winning instant kiwi. But owning a RG500 was like winning lotto.
