they wont stop dents, but they make it harder to dent, slightly. they also make your pipe rust around the clamps etc. im undecided as to weathr my one actually does any good or not

My take on the wrap around pipe guards is that they are good for MX to prevent rock impact damage but if using your bike off road where you may encounter logs that could impact your pipe on your better off without one. This is because when you hit a log it will dent the pipe without the guard and this can be fixed or if running the wrap around guards it will bend the pipe at hard corners and these are much harder to fix and sometimes the pipe being pushed back can damage radiator hoses etc ending your ride).
A frame cage type guard made out of stainless is a better option for off road use if you don't want to dent your pipe. These can be made easily by someone with access to a tig welder, stainless tube and pipe benders. A combination of the two is better. I've made both over the years but no longer have access to the facilitys to do so now.
On my MX bike I ran a guard similar to the Banzai guards (not sure if they are still around but I've seen similar).
On my off road bike I ran the same plus a stainless cage type guard. I could hit anything on that bike and I often did. These days I run no guards at all and I try to be a better rider but logs are not a strong point for me and I have to fix my pipe every now and again but mostly they are just dents that need to be blown out. One good impact a month back on a hidden stump behind a bush did push my pipe back but I managed to fix that. With a wrap around guard the pipe would have been pushed back further making the pipe probably useless as the impact was absorbed somewhat by the pipe denting.

I've got one and it saves the pipe from all those little dents they usually get from stones and etc hitting them, they wont stop major dents but my pipe is still mint after 9 months and it was reasonably cheap, any bike shop should be able to get one for you.

I've got one on a bike here in the work shop right now, its not stainless and the guy made it himself but it does the job. He runs both types of guards so I'll borrow the wifes camera and take a photo of it tomorrow (can't find her camera so she must have it at work on in her truck).

i recokon the carbon / kevlar one would last about 5 minutes in the real world, by the time a few rocks and branches have had a chip away at it,
