Why the heck would you walk from Whakatane to Taupo, in the year 2008?
Are they real roads, or are some of them proper tracks?

Looks very much like they are just taking the road and avoiding major roads where possible. Diamond Harbour to Kaituna Valley is a good example. The suggested route is entirely via roads where as there is a far more direct route over Mt Herbert (basically a direct line between the two points).

Needs much more work me thinks.

I prefer the "New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas" by Peter Mitchell... Does NOT need batterys and fits in my tank bag snugly. RECOMMEND IT TO ALL...
DOC take's a dim view of bikes on their tracks... so does the FJ...

I appreciate the heads up (or is it more a cock up: tracks / roads?) but not the sentiment.
We need to be really careful to preserve the access we have over DOC and private lands, it's getting harder to gain and the thought of milllions of bikes descending on a walking track doesn't thrill me!

I will now valiantly retreat back down this hole.....

    Google Walking Tracks Fail.

There is a much more direct way from A to B (straight up the guts!) that's around half the distance.
