What is your tow horse?

Getting closer to the day I can ride again I'm currently looking at selling my nana spec sentra and buying a new vehicle to tow the bike trailer with.

Don't really want to buy an old ute as for around $7000 all you can get is a vehicle with over 250'000kms (most are up around 300'000kms) and as you can imagine any vehicle with that milage is going to be tired (i'm not just talking engines too, running gear etc)

Probably going for an 1800cc - 2000cc car. Due to the gas prices. Doesn't have to be super fast just not too gutless

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO TOW WITH? Also is anyone using a turbo vehicle?? I can't imagine towing is anygood for a turbo but the bikes and trailer is light.

I tow with a landrover discovery diesel 200 tdi....
Very cheap to buy, easy to work on engine...quite economic (10 ltr diesel 100kms or more)
good for 4x4 go anywhere and tows 3500 kg.....
200 tdi have got mechanical fuelpump and are easy to "tweek"...unlike 300 tdi with electronics....

14 l/100 km

will do hamilton to wellington on 1 tank with a little bit left over, dont even know the bikes are on the back
We also use my sons girlfriends nissan bluebird but with 2x bikes 1x yz426 1xyz250 plus trailer plus gear its not all that economical especially if theres hills

Yeah see this will be my daily driver too and can't afford the fuel cost of a big 6 cyl car. Was considering Maybe a primera or something. Would love a ute but don't want anything above 2.0L as my old 2.2L carby Ford courier would drink $100 worth of gas from Hamilton to the Mt and back.

(and this was cruising too)

bit cc cars only chew thru gas round town (stop start) if you got more open road commute to work you be sweet, since low reving pretty good on the go juice

I am looking at vechiles at moment as well for towing trailer, and thinking of heading down the v6 route

i mostly use my hiace, 2.8 diesel, not too bad on gas, does about 9km per litre on the open road or better if you slow down a bit with 2x bikes in it. towing a trailer it doesnt seem to use any more but is slower, also have a caldina GTT, tows brilliantly, but havnt towed far enough with it to work out fuel usage. this does about 11-12 km to the litre on the open road without towing

Mate, it's a bike and a wee trailer you're towing. If it's a manual then a 1.5 litre motor will do the job nicely.

So the caldina is pretty good to tow with? I've always thought that towing in a turbo isn't any good as it puts load on the turbo but I guess bikes aren't heavy at all

Up to three bikes plus three riders and all they're gear... the car can tow but it just seems to be a big ass struggle. Plus there are a few places I know it wouldn't even get up. Anyone that has riden or rides at Maddix Park in TGA will know what I'm talking about.

I'd have to unload all the bikes and drive the car up and ride each bike up to be able to ride at that track haha

Think i'll just got for a medium sized sedan.

Subaru wagon 6cyl 3.0l at present but 2.5l would be sweet. 4wd helps.

I've got a mitsi legnum vr4, nice as to tow, don't really notice the trailer. Get 450km per 60l to sandpit from town thats about 13l/100. Yeah stay away from the carbys, had a townace 1.8 that used about the same gas as my vr4 and was so annoyingly slow.

Don't see why turbo's would have any problems at all towing
