Yeah, that's why it's gettting some major engine work done now (not too sure how major yet) so I don't have to miss out...I'm never going to get the money back so I'm going to have to keep the bike forever! That DR350 in Chch keeps laughing at me...

    No this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-228710167.htm

But that one makes me feel a bit that way too...

the 250 is 3 hours away from being diagnosed...so $200ish, then I have every part including new piston, with rings, a spare bore etc. etc. So I'm hoping I'll end up with a fun little bike road legal and 'reliable' for a wee bit under 2k all up, has a brand new MT60 on the rear now too

I'm giving the mechanic a spare stator cover so I'm hoping he'll be gentle...

Let me know how much it costs to get it rebuilt if you go down that route, as the cost might be similar to get my GB done (currently burning quite a bit of oil) as they're both single cylinder 250s

It was a little over 9 hundy for the XT, re hone and new piston/rings, gasket kit, crap job too and over priced for what we got
This rebuild will be about the same, possibly a we bit more. The piston is being re-sleeved and going back to standard, complete s/hand head and new rectifier, and no mechanic fees
I shudder to think what the DR's gunna cost when I eventually get started

Went for a quick ride up the Maitai to see a customer about a job, got a message half way up (in hindsight damn cellphone range) about a customer with no hot water up Brook St, so being the good samaratan tootled back towards town.

By Branford park a nice man got out of a car with flashing lites & nicely offered me an invitation to contribute to a charity fund to renovate shipping containers to relieve the burgeoning overcrowded prisons.

He was very nice bout it tho as I had no licence on me & wasn't wearing glasses (tho did inform him politely that thru a technical loophole I am legally monosighted). As he walked behind the bike I somewhat sighed with relief that I fitted the new numberplate lite & refitted the rego plate to the back.
Suddenly I slumped as I recalled that I was supposed to register & warrantee the bastard as it was around it's first birthday.

He walked back around and very graciously handed me a ticket for $120 for doing 65. As usual I thanked him then cruised home where I checked the rego & WOF. Sure enough it ran out on the 13th.

So I could have been hit for over a grand in fines but got a way with a moderately small fine. He was pleasant & I have to say hopefully pinging those little bastards that have caused the council to bollard the entire lenght of Branford Park.

Anyway I did think of charging the hot water callout to the Brook an extra $120 but I let him off with a warning.

That's good to know, my worst case scenario should be similar, the mechanic reckoned that my bike had been one of "the guy that charged you 9 hundy"s bikes. So probably a similarly dodgy job...

Arse. I understand there is a 7-day tolerance, officially or otherwise.

I got pulled up a few years ago during a bike-stopping exercise being run on the Coromandel, with a WOF a few days overdue. The cop wasn't worried about it, just said don't leave it too much longer. I suspect they do exercise some discretion and a well-cared for newish vehicle is more likely to be allowed more tolerance. In contrast to the bike-stopping exercise, which made them all look like idiots with the complete rubbish that was coming out of their mouths. One wonders whether the front line cops appreciate being made to do such dumb things - making up bullshit offences then lying about it. Quota? What quota?
    Cheers,
    Colin
