Hira is open on weekends off Sharlands Creek though?
That's how I read the sign at the gate on friday?

They have built a bridge over the river up the Maitai by the motor camp and are harvesting up behind the golf course.

What a fantastic day to go out riding. Sorry Nordieboy but got your text too late.

I went over to COllingwood with a couple of KTM retard friends & really put Gonzo into overdrive trying to keep up. (They were nice & waited).

I have never seen so many bikes on the road & 95% of them waved back - even cruisers

I have to say that it is worth a trip over there for the excellent coffee & unbelievably scrummy chocolate macaroon biscuit (they were even gluten free but that didn't put me off) at the cafe.

Heaps of MXers on the back of utes in Richmond. Did the trailride go well? Anyone else get out?

Didn't manage to get out to the laid back, but did shoot over the Maunga. Stunning day.
Is it just me, or are the rocks on the Maunga getting gnarlier...........?!

I don't think it's your imagination, the last few tracks on the bike & MTB have been really boney. It's been a wet winter..

I went through the Maunga about 3:30 or so with the intention of doing as many side/pylon tracks as possible.

    Got all but one
I walked down that one and wasn't at all sure I'd get back up without knobs. Or get through the gluten free mud at the bottom.
Some of the pylon tracks are quite nice for a bit more of a workout than the main track.
I'm getting far more confident about what I can go up (and down) and that's going to bite me soon I can tell

I'm going to get the XR road legal so I can have a play on the more gnarly bits of the various tracks without risking the big DR as much.

Still want to put some knobs on the DR and ride it to and do a laidback on it

Was that the one off to the right, closest to the saddle? I've been down that a couple of times, it looks steeper than it is but yes, I'd want decent tyres. Took me a couple of difficult standing-starts each time, because I wanted the practice rather than doing it the smart way by going back down to the bottom.
    Cheers,
    Colin

Sunday's NMCC laid back trail ride was an absolute blast on the 640A, a really great day out with mates. I took the mirrors off, fitted up a used MX rear tyre and an enduro DOT front. It was a dry and dusty day, so no mud issues with the big heavy pig. Almost all was hardpack gravel roads and hardpack firebreaks covered in big goolies.

Did all the A and AA grade loops at various times during the day; one (down) I didn't care to repeat as it was too much like hard work. I had to keep increasing the compression damping both ends as the speeds rose during the day, in the end the suspension on the big beast was the limiting factor. The bash plate lived up to its name.

One reason for enjoying the day so much was the opportunity to use the 640A in anger. Strangely I only noticed the weight when it bottomed out, or the front-bias on the killer downhills amongst the goolies. I am now much more confident in the front end which was always an issue. As a result the poor front tyre has 80% of the side knobs broken at the base. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Very highly rated as doable on an adventure bike with even modest tyres, sticking to the main loops. Half the A grades were easy enough taken slowly, others you had to be somewhat committed. My mates on a 'Berg FE450 and a TT-R250 both managed to stall/stop/fall over on various hills, both up and down, and manage to get going again fairly easily and by themselves.

Nordie you missed your big opportunity!!
    Cheers,
    Colin

    Nah, there'll be others...

I'm getting more confidence in the front of the DR as well.
On Sunday I did the river crossing by the bridge on the Pelorus side without stopping to think about it and even had the confidance to stop half-way down and take a photo.

My ideas for the '81 XR250 have mutated from cheap trail bike to cool little mini dakar type bike

What river crossing is this? Right at the end by the main rd or further back towards the middle.

WW Do you reckon I'd get Gonzo around the laidback trailrides? Not after the extreme bits just the main trails. If so I'll keep an eye out for the next ones.
I did have the use of a trr250 until the owner rode it into a tree a couple of weeks ago
