Over the Maunga, through the stream at the far bridge (moved the tree trunk) and up the other side no problems at all.
Hori Bay as far as the first 2 roads on the left (Steep Rd and Middle Rd). The little bikes breezed up them with totally inappropriate tyres.
Turned around at the top of Middle Rd and saw how steep it was...
Ummm...
We just came up that?
Jatz is on Shinko 705's and it breezed up stuff we had problems on the 650 and Big the other week with better(ish) tyres.
The bigger bikes can get to the same places but it takes a lot more effort.
The little bikes are also more easily deflected front and rear by smaller rocks etc.
The DR350 has a torquier motor (FMF pipe and re-jetted), better brakes (brilliant front), better seat (harder), better suspension.
The TT350 has a smoother engine and better bar position.
For playing and building confidence, the little bikes are great but I wouldn't want to ride one over to the Clarence or Golden Bay when there's a DR650 in the shed.
Padmei - Hurry up and get one![]()
Yup.... it was a nice couple of hours, chucking the little bikes at things where you'd stop and think about it if you were on a big bike, 'cept you Padders, you'd have a go regardless.
Interesting comparing the 2 350's. I think the TT will be a weapon once it's Nordiefied, maybe drop a tooth on the front sproket and keep the revs up.
I was surprised by the shinko hooking up nicely exiting the creek on the way to Pelorous, and the way the DR lifts the front so easily, even on loosish stuff, and I do like having decent brakes and suspension
BTW.... the road edges on the new bypass are rougher, steeper and looser than they look
Manual says "dry mass" = 113kg Nordie![]()
`i actually thought the manga was a bit more brutal than usual (edit, its never actually brutal either, but its uglier than normal ) on the pelorus side, i should slow down a think! fair few openings of the earth atm,
MT43 road legal trials tyre gets two thumbs up from me!
gotta love the extra range from safari tank too, 000ooOOooh, and fireextinguisher mount worked a treat, cracked bashplate thou courtesy of nelson side i would say ( no offs , only foot stamps !)

Cracked bashplate?
Along the rocky bit by the river to the head of the dam?
About where your XR muffler bolts decided to get off and walk?
Next time through I may kick those rocks off the track.
Or put more on
When Jatz and I were up there we met the caretaker at the gate and he offered to get the key if we weren't confident with going around the gums
Did we really look like total noobs?
Also told him about the condition on 'tother side that he was unaware of and he said he'd get in touch with Clear.
Came down through Maruia saddle road on the way back from the DB on monday evening and the storm damage up there is impressive ,huge rocks and mature native trees strewn everywhere .
Road is still closed though because theyre still working on it (nice job too)
Dont go through during working hours though .
Didnt check the Porika .
I was going to go through Porika last Wednesday and it was closed from the western end, had signs and cones up across the start of the track.
I went around Queen Charlotte yesterday and there were a lot of places where slips were being cleaned up, over a dozen. All of them looked like they would have blocked the road when they happened.
