If anybody wants to meet up for a beer we will be at the Free House 8ish tonight.

Weekend plan is to head of up towards the Rainbow tomorrow morning - hopefully being guided through a few interesting diversions on the way there by CrazyFrog. Then meet up with Rosie's parents in their 4x4 & camp somewhere, maybe in over Edwards Pass.

I took the two norf islanders towards St Arnaud via 88 Valley, Spooner Tops, Smiths Rd, Blue Glen Rd & Kings ridgeline, tried to void the seal as much as possible. They enjoyed my little detours, and their mission was to head down Rainbow Rd and overnight at either Mallings Pass or Edwards Pass camp areas.

Loving those dampened down forestry tracks

I also headed down Rainey River Rd to talk to a farmer about access to a special little pylon track which links up over to Lake Station .

Moss Road to Taraka Hill Quarry???

Just up from Christchurch camping at Kaiteriteri and was looking on Google Maps for rides in the area and noticed there appears to be a road / track from the Sandy Bay Road up to the Quarry on Taraka Hill. Any local guys know if this is rideable?

Depends..... on what sort of bike your riding, and your ability

I think there is a mountain bike race down it, or used to be occasionly. From memory you'd need permission from 3 land owners, The Limeworks at the top, and M.Fry at the bottom, I can't find his ph # just now, But I think he still runs quad treks up there somewhere, have a look up the end of Moss rd, he may be lurking up there and could give you more info. Maybe from Kairuru farm also but I'm unsure on that.
I used to hunt goats/possums/trout up there a bit in my youf.

I may have been up "cow gully rd" Nordie... where is it
I know I've been fishing and had fresh smoked Moki for tea last nite

Photographed the national x-country thingy there once. In the pissing rain...

Along the Hori Bay Rd, before you head up into the hills.
It looks to end at a nice big skid but you can go up to the right through the trees, and up, and up, and along, and up...
Where I stopped, I could look back down along that straight from the Kokorua turn off towards the Rai Saddle.

There may or may not be gorse involved, and Shinko 705's are not advised as there's some short, slow, steep sections with a bit of greenery underfoot that they just spin up on.
I may have made it but 2 goes on my own was enough energy expended and it looked like it headed up to the right off the skid I was trying to get to.

Another of the roads had some rain ruts so deep you could ride up them. But you wouldn't have been able to turn around or get the bike out. They were about 10 feet deep and wide enough, there was not a lot of road left to walk past on.

Ok, so there was quite a bit of gorse

On the up side, Cow Gully Rd goes quite a distance. Almost to the native bush.

We also went down the Slippery Slope of Despair, and we didn't go back up it...

is the slippery slope of despair that one that me and padders wouldn't go down and you did, then just left you there while you battled to get back up by yourself?

If so, where does it come out?

Found some new tracks out the Moutere late this arvo when I went out for a road ride.

A good trailwing tw302? front is a fcuk site worse than a completely munted mt21 both on and off road.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

    That's the one.

You come out opposite the track down to the skid overlooking Pepin Island.
    10-15mins easy.
30mins if you don't know where the hell you're going so go everywhere.
