Cyclocrossed up to 3rd House and back down Cummins Spur.
Don't want to do that again without suspension and balloon tyres...
Some success, some failures.
Some of the tracks are overgrown enough that your feet get pulled of the pegs and if your riding in a deep wheel rut, it's not optimal to have both feet dragging behind you, banging off the rear wheel. Under the trees, it's quite dry and powdery. Almost sandy. Fresh knobs would have been useful...
Found a new track that I didn't know about and failed on a couple of others I did.
Only got lost once.
Very, very rocky in some parts.
The 705’s acquitted themselves well.
Line choice was critical. Some sections, like dropping down from Isolation to the Gun Club Valley, would be almost impossible the other direction.
The GoPro remote worked very well, except that instead of pausing it, I need to turn it off between sections to extend the battery life. The camera sucks the battery dry at the same rate when recording or paused. I ran out 2/3 of the way through a really cool section![]()
I went for a short blast yesterday avo in there for what was sposed to be about an hour. Went around central road etc felt pretty shattered after a week at kids school camp so bailed early & ended up at sharlands gate at carpark which was locked. Frick! So went all the way back wondering if the gun club gate was still open - it was-phew.
I'm gonna have to stay off the bike for a few weeks as the last 2 rides I have been on which are usually excellent have felt like hard work & not as enjoyable. Any one else start to feel 'over' riding? it may be caused by this excellent long dry summer.

What time was the gate shut?
If the gun club gate is shut, you can back up a little and go through the gate in the fence line on the corner, into the paddock, over the creek and come out at the concrete ford at the entrance to the carpark.
The condition of the tracks makes for quite physical riding at the moment.
Yup, bizarrely looking forward to winter to give me some enthusiasm.
Mind you, if it doesn't rain here or on the Coast I am tentatively thinking of a blast through the Mackley next Sunday. Haven't been over from the Westport end so maybe a nice roadride to Westport for a coffee and gas(for those with inadequacy issues in the tank department), then over the Mackley then home, maybe with a coffee in Murchison and possibly if time and enthusiasm permits do the Porika.
Very set in jelly at the moment so will keep posted etc.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
Just a heads up if any of you are planning to ride the Molesworth soon - closes next week (13th) due to high fire risk.
It looks like you could almost ride around the dam on the beach...
almost as low as i've seen it, so probably worth a crack Nordie.
I'm more than a little pissed about this planned mine up there though![]()
As Hira, Moutere and Wairoa forests are closed due to fire danger, I'm going to have a go at getting from the Appleby Bridge to the Wai-iti and possibly Trass Valley tomorrow.
The water levels are the lowest they'll be for a while and the water is only wet, not freezing and wet...
