Checked the Lonestar and DoC websites and it appears both roads are open. Plan to ride through both this weekend. Does anyone know anything to the contrary? Any particular hazards to watch out for?
Thanks

Just watch for Cooney's Corner in the Rainbow and the Jatz Kink in the Molesworth, otherwise its all sweet.
Laidback next weekend in Tadmor...
Well, the TT is 705'd up and ready for wherever it's going this weekend![]()
In Hira there's a small track joining the Chings Highway/4-cross track area to Isolated Spur Rd.
It's marked as motorbikes only on the AFM map. So naturally I've been trying to find it...
3 times now...
I've found 2 different ways to get to the same point which looks to be the right track by the map, well away from Chings Highway and the wrong direction for the 4X track, but has metal grating under the grass crossing a small gully, which usually means MTB's
I think I need to try dropping down off Isolated Spur Rd and carry a copy of the map with me...
I ended up doing a cool MTB track that loops out and back to the 4X skid site.
Looks like it doesn't get used much. Took about half an hour of cutting gorse, blackberry, pine and another green thing I don't know the name of to get around.
Every time I think I'm going past the comfort level of Shinko 705's, they surprise me
If it rained however![]()
Looks like the loop I did was the bottom loop extension of Change Highway.
They've got a waypoint on the Nelson MTB club site that matches up with my track nicely.
I may have to (shudder) MTB down Chings to get a gps track to confirm where it actually goes.
Decided on a roady ride tomorrow, gonna install my new 16 tooth sprocket( original 15) and see how it goes.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
Doh!
Took a photo of the map on my phone, compared it with my gps track, worked out where the track should start, found it, it was very overgrown and blocked by some big old rotton logs which means it's been blocked for a long time.
Then I got home and realised I should have turned left half a K earlier to get onto the correct track and that one would have a slightly higher chance of success
Found the limits of traction on Shinko 705's too. Quite a few times...
Wet, mossy rocks - Nope.
Rubbly, soft dirt climbs - Nope.
Wet pine needles, wet tree roots and slop (Mungatooks stylee) - Nope.
But they did get a hell of a lot further that I'd expected![]()
I've been up to Birds Clearing today luckily no cloud to ruin the viewthat was the good part of my day.
The bad part was going through town later and seeing a motorcyclist face down on the road and not movingbeen hit by a camper van
kinda makes ya feel mad but lucky at the same time .
Who ever you are I hope it's a speedy recovery![]()
Damn!
So this laidback - is it big bike capable?
In life as in dance Grace glides on blistered feet
