Any of you Nelson fella's know the current state of the Porika?
I'm travelling next week on a loop of the South Island before the Brass Monkey, and plan to ride through Porika, Braeburn, Maruia.
Are they all open, no trees down etc? And OK for big adventure bikes at the moment?
Cheers, Bruce
I was through there about 8 weeks ago and it was in great shape after a recent grading. I have not been through since the Easter storm, it is quite probable that there are trees down with regards to trees down in so many other places.
Some tracks in/near Karamea took serious effort to clear with chainsaws and tractors. If there are trees down it will get cleared, just depends on how soon the power company prioritises it or need to do maintenance up there
I remember this slip being like this for quite some time before it was fixed up

I would try to contact DOC at St arnaud. They would have a pretty good idea if it was open & good.
Brrrrrrrrrr...

Thanks RMOTO & JATZ, that's quite a slip - I won't be taking the BMW across anything like that - perhaps better suited to the DR.
I followed Padmei's advice and called DOC in St Arnaud. They were not aware of any current issues on the Porika, but didn't sound completely sure - So I'll give it a go.
Cheers, Bruce.

Hello Nordie.
Didn't recognize you until I started riding away. Actually, was wondering who the the hell the smug looking cyclist was laughing at mewhilst I was doing roadside maintenance on my BMW.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
Took me a while to realise it was you as the bike was still upright...
Got new chain and sprockets coming for the DR.
Going to be much happier riding it off road with new ones.
Was only last Feb I got the old ones...
I will be heading down on Wednesday, travelling with a small group down through Queenstown, Te Anau, around the south coast/Catlins, then up to the rally on Saturday.
Recent weather will make it interesting - Will probably still check out the Porika, my question was mainly in case it was known to be closed with trees down etc. I'm also travelling on a yet to be dropped BMW with the original Battle Wing tyres, so not much grip (and plenty of caution) if the going gets too "off-road".
Anyone up for Team NADS at the Kaiteriteri 6-hour?

You looking at me? I gave up those a few years ago cos they are in winter. In winter you do a short ride then stand in the shower for a long time. No I do not want to share a shower with any other nads tho.
The last one I did in fact had a spa pool set up by my plumbing mates. They were drinking a lot of beers and noone was getting out for a wee...
