    uh-oh,, need advice....

Dominator has bad miss over 3500rpm. Carb/cleaner/plug all good. Now suspect electrical issues, definatly not my strong point.
Stator seems okay with my kindergarten-quality tester. Not sure about coil/pulse gen etc??
Anyone got any advice on really simpleways to check things out? Cheers in advance! Muzz.

hi Muzz, just to make sure it's not the carb, once it starts missing give it some choke if that improves things keep working on the fuel side
of things ( you would have this fixed by now if it was your xr)

    mmmm, spark seems ok.

Stator checks out fine,, coil was a bit iffy so swapped with another. No difference at all. Pulled choke plunger, cleaned and checked, all good.
Goin into carb again, as pulls like a schoolboy atfull throttle right to max revs, ease off and misses worse than ever.
Wondering if prob is in the needle now, although they not adjustable in CV carb without using shims.
Bloody CV carbs! What twat decided to design them? What the hell's wrong with the good old roundslide??

To me it sounds more like a blocked secondary jet... but then you'd probably have issues getting it up to WOT.

Are these conditions under load or stationary running?

Cheers guys,, misses as soon as it goes over 3500rpm, except if at full throttle.
Also noticable stationary. Bit hard to tell, but exaust note doesn,t really sound 'off', but miss can be felt through the bike.
Goin full depth through the carb, again.....

try spraying carb or brake clean around the intake manifold... maybe you have an air leak?

also remember that 90% of of carburetor issues are electrical

Tried pulling choke on, to see if it was lean,,, died completely. mmmmm.
Seems way too rich, normally choke will make a lot of spluttering and black smoke.
Hooked a piece of clear pipe to the carb overflow and held it up beside carb, turned fuel on and level looks very high.
Virtually up to the height of the inlet mouth??
Float valve seems to stop the flow of fuel if the float is lifted to about level.
How do you check the level on a non-adjustable set-up??
Neither manuals I have list anything?
    Cheers!

So perhaps it's flooding, quite possible it could create those symptoms and certainly sounds like something you should try and remedy. Is it one of those Honda's with the brass float needle and seat? Once they get old there's a wee lip worn into them and no amount of playing with the float will stop it. You can usually replace them with the rubber tipped jobs, float is a bit of trial and error if you have no specs, but i can give you the XR650R level if you want it Muzz

    Thanks for the offer,,
Trouble is that the float is plastic and they have no adjustable tang. wonder if adjustable one will fit.....

I'd be keen for another look. I'm sure you know the roads up there far better than I do.

Need to do a little bit of work to my bike in the morning in terms of putting it back together but could meet you late morning. This time I will have bald tyres

Could be keen for a look. What time? Might even resurrect the KLR in the morning after the ABs game.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

What time would this merriment commence?
