I'd like to give it a go. I was told in the past they have run a 'trail bike' class, ie an easier beginner course designed for non-trials dirt bikes. KLR probably not suitable, still.

Just back from Patarau; was tempted by the Aorere goldfields but we were on a mission. As it was, we had a grumpy upset in the car for the last 20 minutes.

Reckon we need to have a Golden Bay weekender. Shitloads to explore over there. Stay in cabins or something so only carrying sleeping bags and tools. Possible destinations are Cobb Reservoir, East Takaka Rd, Totaranui, Aorere Goldfields, Whanganui Inlet to the Anatori, down the beach to Big River (flag riding to the Kahurangi Lighthouse hut as it could turn into a mission) & return, Knuckle Hill. Any other suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Colin

    Golden bay

Golden bay is somewhere I really wanna explore, so am very keen.

The lighthouse should be do-able shouldn't it? as long as we go in the morning so there is time for contingincies etc.

Just had a cool idea, maybe we need a big bike trials day
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

    We stole your gal!

OK so we stole Jen (MYGSXF) from Nelson for the weekend and made her go on a full on adventure ride - well about time she got on with it don't ya think!

Check the Orongorongo thread from page 5(?) onwards to see where we took her and the odd photo of her totally getting into it!

And my DR is now heading rapidly to looking like Woodman's KLR! Kinda interesting riding tracks with severely bent bars on one side. Right gotta go take a few photos to appease the Welly massif!

    Cheers, Dave

The problem is fording Big River. Even at a low king tide it is between knee and waist deep. If we drown a bike (either running or being walked across) we could be up for some serious time wastage. That would be sweet for an overnighter at the hut, but a real downer for a weekender that includes a lot of elsewhere.

I had the same problem at Big River (Kahurangi) in January, on a king low tide. It was definitely a no-go esp on my own, just wasn't worth a drowned bike. You will have a good hoon along the beach and experiment with the dunes before you get to the river tho' so still a worthwhile trip.

Err yeah it was new 3 weeks ago! Well technically 2nd hand with 850kms on clock and few scratches on crankcase, but new!

I'm still fooked but bike mostly repaired at Howies y'day, just need new indicators for rear and she'll be legal lookin again! Front wheel needs a balance though!
    Cheers, Dave

my advice on indicators is do not get original sticky out ones as you will break them again. get the old xr ones. I got wr ones hanging down behind the rear rack, looks silly but absolutely unbreakable there.
