Why has this barrier been installed

I have just come back from a ride around Paremata road and there is a new death trap for motorcyclists. It is not a cheese cutter but probably about as effective at injurying a motorcyclist.

My first thought was - what is the hazard the barrier is protecting against? There is no special hazard I can see - just some vegetation and then water. Have a look at the pics - the barrier is high up and supported on skinny metal posts. It doesn't look very strong - but what would I know?

Last time I went to Otaki I noticed just out of Waikanae I think it was, some cheese cutters right on the side of the road, not very long, maybe a few hundred meters and they didn't seem to be there for any reason either, looked to be a drain they were protecting Jo Public from. I would rather fall off my bike into a bit of water than one of those bloody awful barriers or a cheese cutter eh!

Yep - as per the CCs, it is the posts that present the greatest danger. Note it is a numbered (Transit controlled) road as well...
Their 'rules' state that a barrier is only to be used where the danger of no barrier is greater than having it. Strangely, grassy verges have become dangerous (in some cases)

a. Transit do not give the proverbial Flying Fuck about Motorcyclists. Don't compain or they'll sharpen the poles.

b. That is a DoC protected wetland and they don't want cars full of petrochemicals and heavy metals diving into the area off the road. I kind of agree with that.

I have actually been in a vehicle that has gone off that exact piece of road. It was quite a soft landing actually and the car was still quite driveable after it was pushed back onto its wheels and winched back on to the road... so I'm buggered if I can see why a barrier would be needed there.

better yet go slide into the armco an then type us a little story as to how you now feel about it, an why you would still prefer armco vs. concrete.

I drive a 40 foot semi round there on Sundays... tis an 80 k zone and you really don't want to even try going that fast unless you are a GOOD rider AND know the road like the back of your hand...
