Air filter for a VFR750 - well who knows.... it hasn't arrived yet. ($137 for an Airfilter !!!)
Speedo cable for a VFR750 - not arrived either...

I can understand why NZ does not hold huge stocks of parts. BUT.... I don't know why every retailer ignores the demand for parts to be delivered quickly and cheaply from available sources.

I've learned my lesson .... I will buy all my parts from the web in future. All parts retailers here are pathetic.
So your speedo cable is for your 1991 VFR750? And you seem suprised the dealer doesnt have a cable? Dude the bike is 17 years old, I'd be surprised if Honda Japan have one, generally they will supply parts for 10 years.
Try a wrecker or someone that specialises in automotive cables. Have you tried Econohonda? As for the air filter are you looking for genuine? Have you tried getting a K&N filter or similiar?

Yeah I've dealt with Farnell, blardy marvelous.

I wrecked a turbo on a ute i had. I got a fully reconditioned guaranteed one delivered from the USA in 2 days for the same cost as having the old one "maybe" fixed using scavenged parts.

the WWW is the way of the future.i buy and sell most of my stuff on there these days, including for all the bikes at work.after years of dealing with sales staff who couldnt care less in some cases,i now cut thru all that shit and order online.if i cant get it locally or it is too expensive(which it often is)it is often just as quick and cheaper to get it from overseas.
if the local dealers are looking after their customers and making an effort though, price should not be the only consideration.its a case of valuing staff too, because a sales person that knows their stuff and cares about the customer is worth their weight in gold.pity a lot of dealers dont seem to know that

I have commented on BMW parts prices in the past - you can consistently order parts from the UK or Germany and have them landed to your door in a week for 25-30% less than BMW NZ - who take 3 weeks+.
They add no extra value for the extra money.

just had to add to this post! online shops in NZ don't work much better that dealers!
chain tool - ordering on a website from ChCh 4 weeks ago - no sign of it
chain, ordered a gs500 chain from another website, just found the chain is clip link which as far as I can tell is not recomended for the bike, and now they want extra for the riviet and more delays... prices were ok, but the fact i'm 1 month later and still with no bike, or any sign of getting my bike working is just crazy...

All I want is 2 'rivet links' for my (very common) 520 RK chain on my racebike, I've gone up 2 teeth on the back sprocket and now the chain is on the short side...................easy fix, go to local and order a couple...........WRONG!!!!!

Local says no worries, go in next day.......have 1 there but suppliers are unpacking an order come back tomorrow, ok sweet as, give them a few days over the weekend and go back.........sorry theres none in the country, thinking the piss was being taken I joked, but no there isn't any here.

Cmon...............a bloody common chain size for a sports bike and ya can't join the fuking thing together with the right link............I even tracked down an elusive chain riveter( a job in itself ) to do the job properly........am at a loss for words really, if it were an exotic part I could understand it, but its not.

Is it any wonder more people are buying from offshore..............

Sadly that seems to be the tragic story here. I recall having problems in 03 trying to get mods for my SV1000s, I subsequently went off shore to USA market and ordered a heap of stuff, undertail, hugger, full fairing, indicators, mirrored screen and light lenses, integrated led tail and indicater runway set.... and more.
So cool they were, that I started to get orders, and eventually had quite a business going.... sold heaps of mods sourced from Europe and usa as well as direct from suzuki in japan lol.... NZ suzuki got pissed off and tried to block me, however I had distribution set and then snuck in the back door to supply aussie and usa as well.....
Did ok, but got to big so sold the business on to another dude.... Internet makes it easy to get stuff, and cheap from overseas. I recomend anyone to give importing a go. Especially gear.

try looking at these places: http://www.shooindustries.com/

    Parts: http://www.bikeit.co.uk/

    Performance http://www.bikeit.co.uk/

Loads more as well, very reputable brands.

$237 for a brake lever with 2 weeks wait from a local dealer.
$100 incl. shipping from US, arrived in less than 7 days.

    Go figure.

    I understand that
    1. Local shop needs to make margin out of it.
    2. Bike population in NZ is not so great, so yeah it's a bit more difficult to keep things in stock.
    3. Whenever I shop online overseas, NZ as a whole gets a few dollars poorer, and it might affect me in the long run too.

But c'mon, I have my life too and I'm not made of money. Cashflow and time are real issue. Afterall, I only have less than 100 years to enjoy in this lifetime, most likely.

I've seen a sign on the counter of one local shop where "if you ordered it: you bought it".

Basically if it turns out to be the wrong part - tough luck.

And I know from a very reliable source that this applies even if they helped you order it! (i.e. had a go at finding it in their books and gave you the part number(s)).

...so where's the advantage in buying from the shop in the first place? Surely the "benefit" (that you pay for) is their expert advice and back-up if things are not right?

The government has a big part in making it better to buy overseas.. go the USA, more business friendly!.
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/n...ectid=10644124
Winning ecomonys were trying to copy. And it`s not the US
    Britian 17.5% Vat
Greece 23.5% Think i heared in sales tax
This not only adds to the cost of a product directly, but in lot of other costs of doing business here.
So go and whinge at your dealer, it all there fault. I`m sure they love to be whined at about things they can`t do anything about. They know it cheaper to buy in the USA,they probably get told 5 times a day.
Buing overseas is just cheaper, do it, i do. But if you want to whine , whine at the cause of the problem. At least simi attempt to understand why.

I'm liking this government - they're punishing the evil small businesses for ripping us off for years by daring to make a profit.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

The 12.5 % GST does not account for things that are sometimes 2 or 3 times more expensive here.

No your correct, only account for as you say 12.5 + 12.5 on all there bills, and so on. So you think the Retailer is making 300%, they don`t .That must be why non ever shut down, or maybe they shut down to move to a tropical island . As i said buy from the USA i do, and it makes sense to. NZ Retailers can`t compete,But why. I guess your not interested, forget i mentioned it.
