I thought it was more a crisis in management myself.

Seeing as you lot are interested: it was a bit of Oooh, this is a bit of a steep downhill, look front wheel skids, oops, going a bit fast for this tight right hand corner (don't accelerate downhill, remember this), hello nice soft bushy thing.

    Back on topic....A plan!

Seeing as there seems to be a small pack of us now a rough plan would be: 10.00 in Taupo, 11.30 at the start of the 42 traverse (near to national park), 1.30 at Owhango (the other end of the traverse), 2.30 at national park for the Fisher track, about 4.00 at the end of the Fisher track and about 6ish at Whangamomona.
This does mean no buggering around, 2 hour lunches, punctures etc but there are obviously options to miss the Fisher track if we need to. Personally, I want to do both the traverse and fishers and as much gravel as possible between.

You can run it either way but if you start from National Park it is generally downhill.
Starts at fishers road by the train station in National Park running in a westerly direction and comes out at Kurua road (joins Retaruke road).

You can find both of these on Google earth if you fancy a bit of a look, looks quite cool when you tilt the terrain map to get an idea of steepness of the hills.

Aha. So then you go to either Raurimu or Owhango and SH1 to Taumarunui?

Oops, just realised that there is a back road from Owhango to Tmn, so I bet that's
    where you're heading !

    Bugger...on to plan B maybe?
I will ring DOC tomorrow to get a few more details and post the result, either way I'm sure I can find some suitable entertainment in the area.

    Back to plan A

I have talked to DOC at Tongariro and the Traverse is only closed to 4x4's as per their usual seasonal restrictions so we are ok to go.
I will make some enquiries to try and find out the track conditions (other than DOCs "probably wet?") but as long as we continue to have drying weather we should be ok. I will take a jar of common sense as well, I've just got to remember where I last saw the damn stuff....

If weather & conditions are against us there is pleanty to explore in the area, Pureora, Pillars of Hercules, Rangipo Intake and Tukino skifield so maybe a circumnavigation of Ruapehu and then gravel to Whangamomona. Depends who decides to come from where and realistic time & weather constraints.

At this stage lets leave it until the week before to confirm a route and meeting places and as usual we will make it up as we go.

Thanks for the update Mike but what time on saturday?????

Awakino shouldn't be a problem, I'll just adjust the timing of the friday chaos to suit. Awakino is certainly a nice pub to stay at, you coming over for a drink on friday then?
