    New Cheesecutter for Upper Hutt!

The road 'improvements' around the Moonshine Road, Whakatiki st, Riverstone area are not new but..........the holes in the ground and the tell tale metal end plates ARE!!!!!

They wern't there yesterday but when I drove to Lower Hutt this morning there they were, on the bend just north of the Moonshine bridge where the old River Road - Monnshine Road junction was. I would say its going to be about 100m long around a sharp 90 degree bend when heading north you will faced head on with it.

I don't think there's any good reason to have it, they have shut off that intersection to most turning traffic so you can't cross lanes etc. You can now enter and leave moonshine road following the same direction of travel. This cheescutter would only stop people from failing to take the bend which could happen on any bend. You don't see these on every bend FFS why here??

My guess is because this bend has a particularly bad head-on crash record.

In my experience most of the crashes happen either on the bridge or people failing to take this bend heading south and run off the road that way. There was one fatal there where a car pulled out from Moonshine road into the path of a truck which was part of the reason why they have altered that intersection. But the cheescutter, I dunno man, I don't think they need it, you can't have one on every bend! I can see some badness coming from this.

A Wellington coroner is calling for Transit to fast-track safety improvements on a section of State Highway 2 due to the severity of crashes occurring there.

Coroner Garry Evans cited two recent fatal crashes on River Rd (SH2), used by commuters travelling between the Hutt Valley and Wellington, and recommended upgrades to reduce the chance of them recurring.

Krystal Bennett, 18, and Khan Edwards, 12, were killed in September 2005 when a car driven by Leah Peneha, in which Khan was a passenger, crossed the centre line and collided with Ms Bennett's vehicle.

Peneha, who was high on meth-amphetamine, was jailed for six years and six months on two charges of manslaughter and two charges of dangerous driving causing death.

Mr Evans' inquest report, released today, called for investigation into extending the median barrier further north along the highway to catch cars before they could cross into the path of oncoming traffic.

Krystals crash happened on the straight away between the two passing lanes between River stone and Silverstream. Straight bit of road, three lanes wide. No where near this corner, it had nothing to do with it.

The other fatal that may be refering to was a motorcyclist V car. Car pushed into south bound lane by another car NOT biker fault just north of Silverstream beyond the merge heading North, again straight bit of road!

Protecting this one corner will do F all but cause more carnage, I bet my bottom dollar.

Fucking wonderful. Our very own Stonechucker would have lost more than the the use of his arm....
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

SC is a Stokes Valley member who lost the use of his arm after an off on that same corner.

It looks like they are going to do away with cars turning right (Northward) onto SH2 at the bridge - that's what happened to Stonechucker. A van pulled out turning right into his path. Ever since I take extra care heading south to make sure any Sods waiting at the give way have seen me.

I'm one of those weird people not opposed to wire rope barriers. But I am getting concerned at the pattern of raising the metal armcos horizontal beams higher off the ground and replacing the wooden uprights with sharp metal poles? Around Whitby-Pauatahanui inlet is a classic case. Now they have left enough room for a sliding rider to go under the armco whereas before they would have glanced off!

Exactly. And a fence is reqd to stop this, why? The installation of low curbs channelling the direction of possible travel, as in any islanded intersection is all that's reqd.

I don't understand why you are ok with CC but not armco. Armco posts (metal or wood) or CC posts...what's the difference? Hit one or other, and you are dogtucker.

    Hi guys.

I just got back from a funeral in Hamilton an hour or so ago and TBH didn't notice this.

I'll have another look in the morning, but it was my understanding that the wire rope was only going to close off the egress from Moonshine Rd.

Interesting if they've done that though. About nine months ago I had an explosive blowout on Moonshine Bridge that sent me across the path of the traffic on the wrong side of the road. I wonder what would have happened if the WRB had been there?
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
