    Input on a trike idea

    Gidday
I'm doing some research for a shop project ( I run a small 1 man band fab shop)
What I was thinking of, a Mazda 12A rotory motor, 5 speed box running to an independent rear... just becoase I have em spare
Now for the fun bit when I do projects for myself I like to do em sort of to an extreame level just to make em fun... what I was looking at was making this low and a sit on but with the seat down low and set it up with a sports style steering and over tank stance, but with also with nerf bars so you can move around on the trike and use body english to help it corner
What do you think worth doing or something thats gona kill me
Oh and for the flamers I don't care if you'll beat me on two wheels, I want an interesting project that will be a bit of fun when its done

    Cheers Reece

    Just a thought.......how about a Subaru Trans-axle set-up.....maybe even auto trans

Just be aware of CERTIFICATION requirements... its not just a case of rocking up to the testing station for a W.O.F. THAT is what is usually the killers of such projects. But it sounds like a starting plan....

no problem there I know the process well from building 4wd's, and yes I imagine I'll have a few issues to sort but thats part of the fun finding an answer that lets me do what I want and keeps the certifier happy

Na I think I'll stick with the rotory I know this motor, it happily sits on 12g if I do this I want something that will scare me the other thing is I want a manual, I want it to ride like a bike well sort of twist throttle seqenshal (sp?) gearshift on the foot hand clutch etc
Brakes still have me a bit tweeked hmm don't know if I do both off the hand or leave em single

Thanks for the pic Subike theres some cool work expecially like the blown 8 but they are all cruisers... I want a forward stance feet behind lowish bars where your pretty much lyiing on the bike, with a seat thats easy to roll either side so in a corner I can roll down low and push the bike sideways something different to anything I've found on the net ... yes I know its gona make setting up a bit difficult due to alot of the weight being forward but if I get it right this should handle like a demon

Oh and kiwifruit... na I've seen them on the net it just looks wrong, and at the end of the day form is still a design consideration...

Have a look at randomphil profile and perhaps chat to him about it ! Know he's done a mazda rota trike !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

    Interesting project idea.

I like the different sports seating idea, however the only real isue I forsee is with your weight over the bars true sports style will make it a bugger to turn as it will be a lot more work pulling the bars on a trike.
Possibly wide flat bars on the top fork clamp or a wider tall clip-on style will aid steering.

just run a search on him, Damm that thing must drag a bit of air... but its still a cruiser, upright seating, it would be interesting to see what his braking is like under hard braking that front wheel is taking a huge load!!

I'll be pushing as much weight back as possible the gearbox will only have a vibration damper between it and the diff being IRS I can use the range of movement in the cv's to move the rear wheels forward a bit, use the cooling battery tank etc to aid in balance, to ease some of the steering force I can play with the steering head angle, rake and trail... its not gona lay over like a bike so there is room to play with these so long as I have enough trail to self center :: and yes I will be using a wider bar setup all that said I'm still gona want a fair portion of the weight on there just to give the front the grip it needs to hang on in a corner becouse it stays vertical the weight has to be there to push the rubber down, on a bike you get the extra grip from G forces from the cornering, worst case if my test runs show I need more weight and teh steering is to heavy I'll step off the steering head and modify a power steering box off a car ::
Ideally I want this to break the back loose before the front, sledging off a corner dos'nt appeal

    Hi Reece,

It's great to read about your scratch-building. Definitely keep us informed of your projects - you might even pick up a client or three from here.

Watching with interest how you get stuff certified too. Great work!

    Steve
p.s. sooo tempted to build something myself. Sadly, brokeass and no workshop.
"I am a licenced motorcycle instructor, I agree with dangerousbastard, no point in repeating what he said."
"read what Steve says. He's right."
"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

its still a bit away... got a trials truck to finish and then a new toy for me a Valiant Ranger Ute that needs a new motor don't know lexus or infinity at the moment I'm just doing a bit of research into the idea of a low sports style trike and if it would work like I imagine, been more than a few yrs since I was last on a bike and that was offroad, I never got into road bikes, a mate of mine did and his death put me off them at the time
Sort of got interested due to a client who wanted a V8 trike made up, he was a dreamer but he did get me interested but with my sort of twist
If the feed back is good on the idea, thats what I want from you guys... is this gona ride like I think or is it gona try and kill me
If its good then I'll start doing the figures and sourcing the rest of the parts.... work willing this time next yr I should be looking at test runs
Oh and its a shop project at the mo, I didn't think about making others you never know tho

    Cheers Reece
