A proud moment!

Well, yesterday afternoon I came home from a quick ride in this beautiful weather to find half my bike completely covered in oil.

Quickly washed off all the oil as to not stain my beautiful chrome to discover I had a pretty serious oil leak coming from the alternator. (after lots of other theories being tested before discovering that)

Having very little experiance with pulling apart the engine I thought i'd have a go at it, so set to it. The alternator cover was proving a right bitch to pull off (after some research, it seems to be common with all rebels) and I discovered a hole in the gasket. Scrapped off the old one and ordered a couple of new one's from Wild West, which was gonna take 3 weeks.. damn ex-japan bikes..

So I bought some gasket goo instead with the intention of just using that while the proper gasket comes in.

Laid on the goo, re-assembled the engine, and all is sweet again! No more leak and no more worries.


Having never done this sort of thing before I was quite proud of how it all turned out, though there were a fair few mishaps.. check for holes in your drain pan when draining out your oil..

So yeah, just the tale of a proud biker and his son of a bitch of a bike!

Good on ya! I know the sense of accomplishment you feel. Be careful with your thumbs when changing/tightening your chain, as those sprockets are dangerous.
Assuming your bike has a chain/sprocket.

I am a little confused.
Isn't the alternator part of the electrical system? How could it have an oil leak?

See, I was confused about that also. But after a bit of a rsearch apparently there's always some oil sitting in the alternator, I assume just around it and not actually physically in the electrical component.

I was pretty chuffed with myself recently when I changed my own front tyre and put it all back together again...AND it worked!!! AND it passed a WOF! terribly terribly satisfying...I was so pleased a little bit of wee escaped

Another tip to add to this one, if you want a green cat, get the dog to chase your cat through the garage, the cat might run into the drain pan and get radiator coolant sprayed all over it.

Good for you!!! Very satisfying doing stuff yourself eh, as Number One here discovered, so maybe another tip for first timers is to wear Depends while working on your bike...
