DB1k 2009

Hi all,
I am looking seriously at doing the 2-dayer. Am a bit of a newby to adv riding.
I have a fairly gutless XT400 (jap import that I got for $1630) that I am currently doing pipe and jets on to try and get it going a bit better.
I live near Tauranga so need to look at booking the ferry pretty soon.
Just waiting to see if I can get some decent grunt out of my XT before commiting.
Won't be keen to do it if bike can't accelerate reasonably hard up to 100km/h.
Hope to have pipe and jetting all sussed out by Monday 3rd Nov.

I kept the road sections down to a nice cruisy 85-95kph last time. Much easier on the body.

As long as the old packhorse is running you'll be right. I'm not set on breaking any records - the longer on the road the less flesh lost to the sandflies

Hmmm, it's never going to have the sort of grunt your other three bikes have. I gather you are not new to dirt riding with those 2Ts in your stable.

If it is healthy, a 400-4T single should be ample, even in std trim. It should be at least as strong as my '01 DR-Z250, and I'd have no hesitation taking it on a DB. Does it have any JDM restrictors or something?

Your XT will handle the DB just fine as it is. My WR is crap on the seal, 90km/h road speed, so you wont be lagging behind. I'm more likely to be behind you on the road.

Just make sure the bikes you use have more than enough life left in their Chains, Sprockets, Brake pads and Tyres, with cleanish air filters etc enough to get you there, + the 1000km ride and home again.

Amazingly, the tank bag doesn't actually get in the way,... well not much anyway. I was quite surprised myself.
I tend to agree with the theme of recent posts,.. basically, power is not anywhere near as important as reliability on the DB1k.
Will be altering a stock DR-Z400 pipe to fit it tomorrow..., Cant help myself. :-) Got it off TradeMe for $50 plus $30 freight.
And yes, I will be taking a good look at tyres,chain,sprockets,pads etc. Good words of wisdom there Transalper.
