OK, well I've fitted the DRZ400 pipe. It was not too tricky and looks quite standard. I raised the needles on both carbs 2 notches to richen it up a tad, just 'cause. (note: 2 carbs on a single piston) Drilled some holes in the airbox inlet. Filled it up with 98 octane petrol.

End result: Seems quite a lot better. Definitely much stronger through the Bottom and Midrange. Top end only marginally better, but better.

I am actually quite happy with the bike now. All for about $2000. :-)
Took it on a 250km ride today all loaded up just to check it out. No probs.
All thats left to do is to bite the bullet and book the ferry and commit to the DB1k. Hope to do that very soon. Just need to make absolutely sure that I will have that time free.

    He started it!

He only rides a green bike so the grass stains don't show up

    Next tank try 91 octane.
My Nordie and DR both have a stronger bottom and mid range with 91.

Oh... I thought I just used 91 because I was a cheapskate , now I see there is a 'reason' for it

Just a bit of info. My mate enquired last week about when the Rainbow Road will open, and there's a wee problem. It seems that currently it's closed by "massive" slips, but it is hoped to have them cleared by Christmas, so it can open when Molesworth does. If so, shouldn't be an issue for the DB1K, but no doubt there'll be updates as the date gets nearer.

Hmmm, maybe I should try the Z on it? Even though the manual says min 95? I normally run it on that high octane stuff from BP (98?)

Sorry, should start a new thread, but anyways...

I rang about a key yesterday and have been told the slip it near Hells gate (the southern most locked gate area) but the road is open. We are heading through in a couple of weekends time so will also be able to report back. Thanks for the heads up RD but I really don't think this is going to be an issue.

I have been told however that the road is definitely not a fast road at the moment due to the slip and other issues. I assume from this that it is pretty rough over the slip. Sounds like fun

    Cheers R

How about we don't repeat last years "you might not be able to get through" posts and everyone rest assured that you will be briefed on what you can and can't do at the BBQ on Friday arvo at warewolfs. If plan B is needed to be implemented it will be done then.
Last year there was all kinds of concern about the Molesworth but we had a plan B and after all the fuss didn't need it.

Good news if it's open already, but my mate's info seemed to think otherwise. An actual report from a KBer will help. As an aside, the petrol station that's actually in Hanmer Springs (opposite the Heritage) isn't a petrol station any more, there's no pumps now. The Caltex just out of town on the way back to SH7 is open 7:30am to 6:00pm 7 days.

Yep, same as the last two DB1K runs and the route sheet takes you straight to the Caltex just on the edge of town anyway.
Good on ya 4 trying to be helpful I suppose.

yea just done that experiment with my klr, and it definitely runs better at all rev ranges on 91, and will lug out of a wrong gear choice now. Only issue is now I cannot get over 400ks from a tank.
