Would it have just been the bearing dying on it's own or a possible oil pressure issue?
Dunno about a big bore kit $, wouldn't mind speccing up to a 690 Rallye!
Most of the rebuild parts are pretty expensive.
Prices is US Dollars only as a guide, prolly double them for NZ:
Piston $350, Rings??, Cylinder if unable to be recoated $450, Crankshaft complete with 2 bearings and conrod $650.
Oil pressure was fine, no loss of oil anywhere, just a few substandard (critical) bearings in pre 2003 LC4's were prone to early failure. KTM issued a workshop notice advising replacement of main roller bearing in particular.
God I love the internet, some very handy info out there......

Will have to check that camshaft bearing, there are a few reports of them going, although usually much higher mileage machines I thought. Definitely not the rocker roller bearing? Check Clint's 50k service thread for other stuff that may be worth doing at the same time.

You won't get to a 690 rallye, that's the next generation. But a 660 Rallye is possible and a quite common conversion on the 640s. Probably no more expensive if you are having to replace all those bits, except it also needs a different camshaft. Apparently a quite useful increase in power. idleidolidyll was getting 65 rwhp from his 660 conversion, IIRC. Dunno if it makes it peakier.

For the record, there was only one bearing that was prone to failure pre-2003. The ball bearing behind the clutch was upgraded to a roller bearing, cost about $100 to replace it yourself. Ex-factory since 2003.

Anyway, glad it is not as serious as you feared!
    Cheers,
    Colin

Well, I guess I am a bit overdue for a report back.
Unfortunately, my crash at Ryan's corner was probably the most defining part of my participation in the DB1k 2-dayer.
I still have fairly sore ribs and shoulders but can at least now sleep well and move around ok.
I seem to be improving day by day. Was booked in at Taupo race track ('96GSXR750) this Friday but have had to cancel.
The DB1k was just part of an 11 day (2770km) bike trip for me. But it was definitely the best part.

I absolutely must make a few thank you's:
A big thanks to Nordie and Ms Nordie for providing organisation, accommodation and some meals.
A big thanks to Shane for providing support wagon, fixing my puncture and having the correct tube for the job. Also for returning my bike back to Nelson. Top man.
A big thanks to all 3 of the girls in the 2 day group (HOT, Mrs Jatz & Ms Topo) for looking after me post crash, getting to the medical centre, and back to Nelson.
Cheers to Topo for inadvertently acting as my tour guide for a large chunk of the first day. Was quite a challenge just to keep up with you in some parts :-)
Thanks also to Padmei, Ham, Aslan, and Jatz. I know some of you guys helped to pull my bike out of the bog, (memory here is not so good) and get me on my way again. It was great to meet some new people and take in some spectacular scenery whilst traversing some terrific terrain on two wheels.
Oh, and cheers Padmei for sorting out the Sat night accommodation.

Thanks also to the organisers and all involved. This event really is a great introduction to adventure riding in NZ.
I just wish I could have ridden on day 2 as well. My $1600 XT400 has probably given me more fun per dollar than any bike I have owned so far.
..... if only I lived in the Mainland.

    More Photos

Suppose I had better put up my photos. I've put them here rather than on Advrider cause most of them are of the KB riders at the start and the 1 day riders brunch. Hopefully the pics meet the site rules, not that I can bloody find them when I want too.

First up photos of the riders briefing I took just after talking to you all.

    Thumbs up #1 Ryan!

thanks for posting - an interesting perspective for those of us who did the easy 2 option compared to the 'classic' 1 day (Longest Day) option.

Again - thanks for the time and effort you and your pals put into organising what in my view is one of NZ's iconic adventure rides.

    cheers Aslan
