Yep - That's the pylon track.
On the 1st DB I did it on my lonesome looking for Christian and someone else who had missed a turn near the bottom. There were some wickedly deep wheel ruts at the start and then it opened up to stuff I'd love to try again.
It doesn't just look like horrible slick clay, it IS horrible slick clay![]()
Just a thought , why not change the route to end the one day at St Arnaud ,gives the two day'rs something to wait up for , and gives the one day'rs a cruisy ride the next day ?
Good idea but do you recon you will be fit to ride the next day after waiting till early morning of the 4th while continuously lubricating yourself![]()
In really there is a much bigger issue - staring in St Arnaud means either going through the Rainbow "gate" at 6.30ish (bit early) or at about midnight (bit to late). The timing of run through the Rainbow and Molesworth is somewhat limited.
Also the run has been designed so that if it all turns to crap it is easy to bail to NN from anywhere around Much north for the 1 dayers. The riders should be back to Murch on the way north before it gets too dark. The last 250kms are all within about an hours ride in a direct line from NN. It is the last 250kms in the dark that are the hardest of the ride - obviously.
The DB1k is first and foremost a one day run so I'm not keen on the idea of mucking the one day riders around. The only other way I can see this working is if the two day riders go back to NN for the evening and get up to meet the other riders coming back in. How many of the two day riders would actually get up between around 0000 and 0300?
It is a bit of a bugger that it is hard for the two groups to meet up when the one day riders finish, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to reasonably and safely arrange it. Feel free to make other suggestions.

Thats all good cooney , sounds like you've thought through all that fairly thouroughly. In which case I'm with topo , get the one day'r out of the way then weve got plenty of time to practice up on the drinking for the Waitangi 2day'r
i'm practicing right now

Well since I will be in the SI about that time, 3&4th Jan I guess it would be rude not to turn up. Think the 1 day is looking the more likely option for me at this stage. Had a dream the other night....my 450 road reg'ed with a Safari tank and a couple of new sprockets.....hummmmmm sounds very tempting....could give the 17 hour record a nudge.....Jez

On ya - the 1 day ride needs to be done at least once. You'd have to be pretty keen to beat the 17 hour record - not that I should be encouraging this sort of thingWe had 4 x 20/25min stops in 20 hours though we could have gone a little faster. The dust in the dark slows you down big time as well. Consistency is the key though not bursts of flat out and slow.

Seems it might be time to put a line in the sand and set the date of the ride.
The 1 Day DB1k will be on the 3rd of January 2009.
The 2 Day DB will be on the 3rd and 4th of January 2009.
It is very likely there will be a Waitangi weekend ride following the same or a similar course but I'll leave that for others to put together.

It wasn't for the faint hearted and if I do it again, won't be doing such high speeds on the shingle again.
It is a fun event not a race and I would hate to see anyone hurt trying to match or beat a certain time
