Snap - Bugger it I'll put my name down for the 1 day as well. I've been thinking it for a while - just waiting to see what El Scooto was going to do.

Going to be a pretty reasonable number doing the one dayer this year. Currently there is 11 KBers plus El (get of your arse and put your name on the list) and I know of two other non-KBers that are keen and there may be a couple more. Might have to be staggered starts between groups else the dust in the dark will be a pain in the arse for the last groups away.

Still looking for ideas for a gathering on the evening of the 2nd? Anybody know of any parks with BBQ's that we could use?

    Cheers R

    Arrow Pre Ride Event

Hear ye hear ye, there will be a BBQ tea at Warewolfs place on the eve of the DB1k i.e. 2nd Jan. It is BYO meat and drinks and gold coin koha for salads which will be provided. Start will be around 5.30pm. Basic workshop facilities will be available. If you dont know where Warewolf lives send him or myself a PM.

This is the only time that all the DB1k riders will be able to meet so I suggest that you all come along. Also I'll hold a short briefing re current route info, expected weather etc etc.

    Cheers R

Went to NN to collect a vehicle for Bro/Sis-in-law this weekend and we decided to go back over Maruia Saddle on the way back south. Turns out the road was "Closed" but we decided to give it a nudge anyway (long way back down the Matakitaki to Murch and around the highway). It was easy to get through but there has obviously been a heap of wind and rain through the area. Lots of trees down (all large logs cleared now) and a few slips. There are a few branches and lots of twigs/leaves on the track over the saddle and there are quite a few muddy sections (5-10m long) where the slip clay has not been completely cleared. Also found one culvert that the top has broken leaving a nice big hole (straddled it in the vehicles but would nicely swallow a bike tyre). Will be easy to get through on a bike but wont be as fast as last year - more track than gravel road.

Anybody been over the Porika or Breaburn tracks recently. I suspect they are not much better?

Pic of road closed sign with brown beast that we collected from NN (yes I know too many wheels but last time I checked I couldn't get four adults and an infant on a bike. A Ural patrol on the other hand... )

Count me in for the 2 day job. Managaed too change a few new year things around so i can now go. Not sure my arse can cope with 1000k in a day on the WR seat plus the lights are not real good at err... lighting things up in the dark. I'll stick my name on the list.
    Cheers Tony.

On ya fulla - look forward to catching up in NN. Not sure that I've be very keen on doing the DB1k on the WR seat either. Tis bloody hard and narrow.

I've been for a blat on said WR. If the DR guys think the DR seat is a hard and narrow seat they'd think the WR doesn't have a seat. Not even remotely in the same league - probably be more comfortable sitting on the frame rails of the DR. You'd learn how to ride standing up 80% of the time very fast on a WR (well this one anyway).

Your not kidding it's ard n narrow. Although there might be a faint chance of me adding to the 2 wheel stable with something a little more suitable, before the off.

    Cheers Tony.

Hi all I see Cooneyr was through Maruia saddle I shot up from Dunedin to see a mate in Nelson on Sat 29th Sep found the saddle as stated the Porika and Breaburn were ok not the same number of slips. We will need to keep a look out 3-4 Jan as there will be a few 4x4 on these rd, they hurt when you hit them head on A.

Thanks for the heads up about the Porika and Breaburn. There will potentially be 4x4 or other vehicles on all parts of the DB1k route. The route is entirely all on publicly accessible roads/tracks so all will need to ride as though there is a vehicle around every blind corner.

    Cheers R

I had a big fright on the Maruia saddle, with an oncoming 4x4.

Lucky it was tight and twisty so the speed was down, we both just stopped ( one lane anyway ).
But getting tired, and everything being so deserted, very easy to do.

So best to ride 2nd or 3rd
