Not quite - I think it is very worthwhile to point out that big brother is very much watching in the Lyttleton tunnel.
I like my license - however I am an impatient man and have often considered pulling off a quick overtake through there (when clear obviously - I have no desire for a crash in the tunnel).

Umm the whole lower street is covered, and several other areas, oddly there is plenty of signage to state this yet drug users are still silly enough to light up those glass pipes directly under them![]()
Thought the same myself from time to time but I guess the guys in the control room know my bike now and where I work.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
A tunnel is about the worst possible place to have a crash.
With all the traffic banking up behind you, think about how the emergency services are going to reach you ...

JMemonic is quite right about this.
Its monitored cause it the main road to the port (the rca is transit not the ccc and its actally a legal motorway) and there is no fire supression system in the tunnel, ie in a tunnel fire everyone dies and the tunnel-port will be closed for ages.
Its not fully camered but most of it is. Its difficult but not impossible for the controllers to work out how fast you are going by timing you between several sets of known points.
Sometimes a lazer operator camps out in the control room and pins your ass that way and I have seen him 3 times in the last 2 years.
If you pass in the tunnel expect a nasty ticket as the controllers have nothing better to do, and I kind of think they enjoy doing it.
Anyway much better fun practicing big back fires instead by flipping your kill switch on and off, helps with tailgaters too!![]()
Thank you for the warning - not one to overtake in the tunnel but I'm sure I've been through there a tad fast.

My timid little brother in his student years, had to drink a jug of beer whilst perched on the roof rack of a Holden Kingswood going through the Lyttelton tunnel at high speed.
He did it and I'm extremely proud of him.
He's now 39 and whilst I'm doing ok, he's a qualified lawyer and doing even better. Go figure
