    Useless KTM

well its not useless but its not working properly,
im 99% sure its not charging properly
the battery goes flat very quickly from using the electric start
when we tested the battery with a multimeter it stayed at the same voltage even when the engine was revved
does any one have any ideas on this or had any similar problems??
any help would be greatly appreciated

the bike is a 350 kitted Ktm 250 exc 2005
the battery is a kiwi x battery
we may just go where no ones been

Just check if the battery connections are clean, not just firm. And make sure all connections, are properly connected. Follow the cable back and check all the joiners.

Get your starter motor cheeked out at a auto electrition. Could be drawing excess current. Worn Brushes or Burnt winding..........

start it, take one of the cables off the battery, measure voltage on + and - cables. if its 0v or similar, then your charge system isnt working, if its 12ish, its not working properly, if its 13 or higher its all good and your battery is poked

erm, you are describing how a regulator works. it prevents the charging system overcharging. But you give no figures.

I would expect it to stop at anywhere between 13.7 - 14.5V. Is it in this range? What does the battery voltage sag to when sitting overnight? What about when you use the starter?

Could easily be a shagged battery, the rough environment & infrequent use kills them. Doesn't sound like a reputable name. A japanese Yuasa or GS would be a better long term affair. Trickle charge off the bike when not used for a while.

some ktms came out lecky start / kickstart but no charging coil in them its up to you to charge battery before you ride mate had a exc400 like that was great for 1st half of the day ( battery was a bit shagged) second half of the day was all kickstart real dumb idea.

i quite sure it does charge because there didnt use to be a problem
the voltage on the battery when running is 12v and this doesnt change regardless of revvingness
we may just go where no ones been

with it idling with the light on, the light is quite dull, but increases brightness as the bike is revved

Sounds like the voltage regulator/cutoff is faulty.Have you tested it with the engine running and the light on? Does it drop or stay at 12 or what?
