My first video

Finally got around to mounting a video cam to my mighty GT250R. Had a custom tank mount manufactured from my initial spec and got a Canon FS100 on it.
Great camera, by the way, writes to SD card so no moving parts. And it already survived a decent fall at walking speed.

So anyway, here is my first test run.

Next sunny weekend I have to tackle the Takas.
Also attached the sketch of the mount if anyone is thinking of getting one made themselves.

Gives a good picture without too much camera movement. You have image stabilisation by the looks? Certainly helps keep things clear. Good stuff

That was very very impresive, good quality, stable and through a screen. Top job, I look forward to future episodes.

If I can be a little nosey pig, how much did the camera cost and how long can you tape for on an s/d card. I've got one of those mini disc things but it's so complicated to use, it's sat in the wardrobe for a year.

that is a really good image. Mine mounts on the mirror which is rubber mounted to the fairing which is rubber mounted to the subframe so there is HEAPS of movement in it. PITA. Thinking about lowering it to just above the front wheel on the side of the fairing but not sure on how I can go about it yet.

The camera is a Canon FS100 its around $625 in NZ, or cheaper if you import yourself no doubt. It writes to SDHC at around 4GB per hour. So with a 16GB card it lasts about 4 hours which is how long the battery lasts.

It does have image stabilization and it works quite well at high speed. But at low speed the vibration is too high for it to cope properly.

I've been advised not to use any cameras that use moving recording media like DVD or minidisk as heavy vibration ends up destroying the mechanics.

Also, youtube compression sux, but if you go to the actual youtube page there is a high quality version as well.

That's great, thanx for the info, I shall stick one of those babies on my christmas list. When's episode two coming out? A bit of Placebo in the back ground would be nice.

Nice quality I must say! I disagree with martybabe I hate music in the background I like to hear what the bike is doing. Especially if its a fast run! A screaming bike is better music to my ears. With that in mind could the video be altered slightly to view the tacho and speedo. Then we can all ride together!
Good stuff though!

Thanks for the mount drawing - I might have to get the hacksaw and file out and whip one up. What thickness plate is it made from? Can the camera be moved slightly on the mount so the rpm and speedo are visible? Do you use the original screws or longer ones?

edit: how did you attach the camera ?

I had the mount machined out of 1 inch thick aluminium but you can just as easily cut it out of 2mm steel. You would have to get longer screws to mount it. The tank screws are just standard M5 screws and you only need 2 (the middle hole on the bike has a fake screw, does nothing)

Most cameras have a tripod mount on the bottom. Its a 1/4" thread with 20 threads per inch. My local mitre 10 had a selection of these bolts. See if you can find a thumb screw so you dont have to carry any tools with you to take it off.

You can see my cut out has a long slit specifically for that screw so you can move the camera closer or further. I specifically mounted it so you cant see the speedo, you never know who is looking :P

Also, the FS100 doesnt have a very wide angle lens so even at futherest position its just getting the speedo into the picture.

And there will definetly be a soundtrack in the next video, a very hot girl told me my engine sounds like a sewing machine and its a known fact that opinions of hot girls matter most.

Yeah they are good to suck on ay. Maybe engine sounds and music, AND pics of said hot girl!
