    Talking Conquering the Rimutakas

I rode the Rimutaka's for the first time today!- well, up to the summit and down again....But still!!
It's been on my mind for a while, and I've turned around twice....But not today.
Up to the top with my Dad running defence behind me- aint no way anyone was gonna tailgate with the big hog on my six...!
Had to come back down solo- can't expect the big guy to nanny the 250 all day when there's real riding to be done!
Thanks to the riders who gave me lots of room- and didn't blast past- and for once some good news on cage drivers....really respectful treatment of a chick with an L plate going pretty carefully.
I was grinning like an idiot inside my helmet all day today, counter steering practice has left my head a bit fuzzy and my shoulders pretty sore but there's no happier girl in Wellington today.

Arr no worries, we don't set any speed records. We normally "lunch and gossip" in Martinborgh, Carterton... anywhere that'll have us. Will have to remember to pop you on the PM list when the time comes!

Well done Victoria. The road can be a bit intimidating, especially if you have read a few crash reports on here.

BUT - it is just a road. I'll wager that a lot of bins on that road are due to riders pushing their limits too far.

When I first did 'the hill' I had no preconceptions about it, hadn't heard anything about how notorious it was etc.

I was 15, had my licence for a few months and my first road registered bike, an ER185.

I was living in Waikanae and wanted to visit my dad in Carterton. The obvious choice was the direct route - over the Aka's, then the Taka's.

I think it took me close to 2 hours but hey, slow and steady ........

I'd say the traffic is a bit busier these days but all I knew was that I was 15, mobile, bullet proof and on a mission.

Anyway - we only learn by pushing our limits a little. No better way to gain confidence than testing yourself eh ?

Well done Victoria, fantastic day for it and I have to say the road is in pretty good condition at the moment.

Great work, Victoria! So good to hear of your ride. Overcoming barriers, regardless of whether they are physical or psychological, is something to celebrate. Nice to hear the car drivers were good, too.
