Been looking at a couple bikes on trade me, need some advice.

This one seems like up my alley for what I want to do, tour around NZ. Any one know how comfortably these F650's are? Cruising speeds etc?

This would have to be the dream bike but does anyone have or know of any for a less price, similar ago for the R1200 GS?
I dont want to spend heaps on the bike, so it can leave me with some cash to get some new gear, ie GPS, new boots and helmet etc and cash for my 2-3 month tour around NZ, in which I will be camping as much as I can and freeloading off kind people in lieu of my cool personality so I would lean towards the F650 GS mainly because its a mini, in my view, mini R1200 GS and does all the same stuff, I think, Im not sure as I have not talked or seen a F650 GS to know of.
Then there is the whole new Japan Import market, which Im totally intrigued about, I mean can you get in the R1200 GS late model for a good price or not? How long would it take as I want a bike before December.
Any knowledge out there guys?
Depends upon what you are looking for. A BMW is a high quality long-term owners bike so if you only want it for a three month trip, you'd probably find it easier to buy something like a Transalp.
A 650 would be fine to tour NZ and allow you to go offroad. The 1200 has a lot more torque and is heavier. No surprises there. If you want to ride quietly and enjoy yourself, a 400 trail bike would work.
If you can, get a bike with hard luggage, it will be cheaper and a whole lot more convenient than trying to sort it out later.
Consider an 1100GS or 1150GS too, very good bikes.
The only problem I've ever heard of is some GSs had rear spline problems at around 60,000 miles (100,000 km). Google is your friend.![]()
heya thanks,
im tempted on this one, which I had listed above
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-174362409.htm
I want to be confortable while riding and the F650GS there is not really out of price range for me, seems like it has the gears, panniers, top box (allthough i dont like them personally and it would be coming off on on trade me again) tank bag which I like etc so what do these cruise at on the motorway?
The 650 would suit me I think but if the op presented itself the 1200GS or other 1150 etc, I might go for that if the price was right but those seem like a real serious bike to me that F650 seems quite resonable, what do you guys think?
Im very tempted too, might go look at some just to look at in Auckland first before I commit to a fly down.
Would it be too risky to buy it sight unseen & have it transported to AKL via bike tranz?
I would say its not risky. Note that its from a dealer - I would tell them EXACTLY what you want it for, and that you might be riding it home, and then PAY them to check it over for you, then under the consumer guarantees act you can recover costs from them if it craps out.

"read what Steve says. He's right."
"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
"Wow, Great advise there DB."
WTB: Hyosung bikes or going or not.
Thats what I thought. I dont really want to ride it home If I can avoid it as it would spoil my trip Im planning this summer for it and I dont mind using bike tranz coz they are really good.
So you say pay them to check it over so it falls back on them if it falls apart 2 ks down the road type thing? I mean it looks is good nick and has the items I want (or was going to buy for a bike anyhow) panniers and bike bag, allthough they are small in cost compared to the bike, its still nice to get a good package.
Ive had a look at and sit on that bike. You can see its done some k's but it did seem sound. According to the salesman (and to some other people what I have spoke to) those motors are unexciting but reliable. I havent seen too many of them, but it does seem to represent not bad value for money. And its a dealer so they might knock the cost of a ticket off the purchase price or something. My concerns would be what high cost maintenance stuff it had had done (I didnt get that far into it when talking to the guy so cant tell you): rear shock, fork rebuild/bushes/chain and sprockets, swingarm pivot bearings/wheel bearings etc, before I worried too much about the motor. Its got hot grips and a higher screen than stock too, IIRC.

Oh right. It does look like what Im after really given my new budget unless a 2004+ R1200 came through the door for around the same price, which I cant see happening? You say unexciting, but does it cruise around nice and comfortably as a tourer on our roads? I do plan a 2 month+ Trip right around NZ on it or something similar...
To me it seems like a good deal all round I guess? Whats the top speed on these things before the engine is ringing and its about to fall apart?
You should get a cheap flight down there , they would probably pick you up at the airport . Hell they could even pay for your flight if you told them you were serious on buying it , i know of alot that do that , if you got it call in on way thru would love to have a look at it![]()

hmmm your tempting me to do so, you should be a salesman if you already are not! I cant afford to get time off at the moment to fly down but I mean if anyone here has seen it, like henrydorsetcase, then it would be cool to see what they say, seems like a good deal to me once again.
also HDC, is it an import?
and binklebonk, come my tour of NZ, ill call in for sure. Ill be making a blog website n stuff and Ill ask people on here if I can stay on their lawns as I pass through from town to town, not asking you of that but just saying you can keep track when I get all sorted and going so you know when Im near, its my own long way down but exploring NZ. got to do these things when you can I say, and right now, I can, well soon. need a proper bike first.
Get in touch with gunnyrob about ex rental R1200s. He got one and has had some problems. Might give you somethings to check.
