    cbr600F4 - noisy clutch

Just went for a test ride tonight on a '99 CBR600F4. Mint condition with full service history etc.. and the price was right too!

Only problem was a rubbing noise similar to the sound of the aux. fan whirring whenever the it idling in neutral and the clutch out. It disappears when the clutch is pulled in but reappears when it is let out again. 27,000Km on the clock. Any CBR600 owners out there had this ???

Planning to get a pre-purchase check because of this.

I had a quick chat with Kerry from Motohaus and he's thinking its the clutch basket may need replacing. Anyway have arranged to do a pre-purchase check on Saturday. Will let you know then.

Also no evidence of wheelie abuse. Forks and seals look good, no leaks etc..

My 98 CBR F3 makes the same noise when the clutch is out in iddle, pretty quiet whirring kind of noise. Had 9k when I got it now just under 15k with no clutch probs.
I would be interested in the results of your investigation into this (if it is actually a problem)

Mine's an FX. Can't say that I have noticed any funny little noises.
I can hear the front discs when I use them at slow speeds, as the pads bite onto the discs. The rest of the time I don't because I must be going faster than the speed of sound.

    Now you've got me wondering...

Well, there's only one way to find out. I guess I will have to go for a bit of a blast. I mean if I am going to start the bike, I may as well.

Awesome motor vehicle - buy it!

The noise is more than likely the CCT (Cam Chain Tensioner) needing replacing...such a common fault with this model. Mine 'was' starting to wear out after only 15,000 kms.

I'll let you know in the next couple of days. Got my newly painted (pretty Honda Red) fairings back today, so just have to fit everything up and I won't be on Kiwibiker much cos I'm gonna be out riding!!!!!!!!!

    Hehehehehe.
Was hoping tomorrow for my maiden voyage, but is looking like a busy day already.

    Crisis averted, no problem found

Well I just got back from having the bike checked over and I can report that there is nothing wrong with the clutch. It's the normal noise that you should get when the compression springs press against the pressure plate.

So apart from some of the normal wear and tear items which I've negotiated into the price, I've bought myself a new CBR600. Planning to settle it all tomorrow morning and bring it home.

I'll have to start a new thread with pics and all.

Good to hear all is OK because from your original description its not quite what I'd say but a typical bike sounds more kind of rumbly with the clutch out in neutral - they are like that from new until the day they die. They are usually driven by straight cut primary gears and the plates and spring can rattle around so they rumble with no load on - Ducatis with dry clutches we know fair rattle like a bucket of bolts.. If its worse than what I'm describing it could be worth taking the side case off and checking out its condition - not usually a major job but it sounds like no problem from you latest post.
    Cheers

You've described it better than I did. It was only when I took it out to the Motohaus this afternoon that I could feel very faintly the rumble thru the bars. I didn't notice the vibration on my original test ride but the owner mentioned it. It was just something I hadn't noticed on my previous bikes or the CBR I test rode from one of the shops. So it kinda of got me a bit concerned.

Sigh of relief Now just can't wait until tomorrow.

Bit of vibration could point to camchain tensioner as well, worth checking out as these do suffer from that. Not the end of the world and easily fixed(usually cleaning it out with brake fluid will do you) so dont let it put you off as they`re great bikes.Obviously if your buying from a dealer you`d expect them to check it out for you before riding down the road.
