Blasting sand on Hamilton roads

just a quick note.... We have some butt heads doing jobs for the Hamilton city council. They are removing painted markings from the road. 'Oh Good' you say, 'less slippery white lines'. But get this they use a type of black corse sand. They have been leaving piles of it on the road. It is like marbles. I dropped my bike on Tuakaramea Road when I hit the stuff. It took three phone calls to HCC to get it cleaned up. A week later there is more of it about 30m further down the road. Took two phone calls and 20 hours to get that lot cleaned up. Then on Friday I found more of the stuff on Avalon Drive (the back wheel swung around a bit). I don't think the are taking the danger it is causing very seriously yet....... I am hitting them up for the damage to my bike so I hope that makes them modify their methods.

So if you find some on the road TELL THEM ABOUT IT before some other poor sap bins their bike. Tell them it is sodding dangerous. If they don't get tuned up over it they will keep doing it.

Thanks for that I ride down Avalon Drive every day. Will give them a ring if I see any (from hospital !!!). The more that phone in the better.

My first off when I was about 18 was caused by not knowing about the danger of loose stones on a sealed road and I have watched out ever since but black stuff may not have sent the danger message. Thanks again.

Just a quick update.... now that council is having to pay for some of the damage to my bike they have told me that they are changing the procedure when they use the sand. They will now bring the vacuum truck through straight after.

They became helpful when I offered to show them the sample of the sand I had collected and kept..... it is an unusal sand.

Some councils are good at sorting out problems and others just don't get it.

Had some potholes in some roads up here.... not where the cagers drive but where a bike would be positioned mid lane. Rang the council and 2 days later they had sorted out.

Transit though just tries to pass the buck........ when (not if) I throw the bike down the road on a transit POS road they'll be getting the bill...

Next update..... The council contractor asked me to take the bike in to Hamilton Motorcycle center to get a quote for repairs..... Took the bike in this arvo and there was another guy there at the counter ...... getting a quote for repairs..... Guess what he had done. Yup same road same contractor just a bit futher up the road. Ground his farings. And it turns out the guy lives just accross the road from me... So now the contractor is paying for 2 bikes........

I wonder if I could swap the old XJ and about $500 for a newer bike?

excellent result, anything that makes them more bike aware is a good thing. sorry you had to bin it for it to happen.
