    General biker questions?

I just got my first motorbike a couple of days ago, and I have a few questions about riding...

I noticed when having a leasurly red through the workshop manual that the gears appear to be straight cut gears, and I noticed when riding that you can easily change gears without the clutch as they are straight cut.... is it bad for the bike to change like that?

Is it sweet to wear jeans while riding or do I need to wear those porno tight leather pants?

Are all helmets safe as each other? I know the full face is obviously safer than the open, but what other differences are there?

Does the carby on the CG110 have no accelerator enrichment pump?

    Cool

First off..... welcome to the site.... and to riding.... and just ride safe out there on the roads.... always keep an eye out for the cars... as they do strange things .... like try to get into your lane when you are already in the lane....lol.

Since this is your first bike.... try and get someone else to go out for rides with you... and have them riding behind you as your "tail end charlie" to protect your butt from the cars....

I wear jeans when riding, cos I cant afford anything else at the mo...

Helmets... I prefer the fullface helmet. They start from $130 upwards.... buy one that you can afford at the mo.. and save for the one that you really want.... but do make sure it fits you properly.

The carby question - sorry I dont know.

Gears question - Sorry I don't know that answer... one of the others will know about that..

Hey mate welcome to the site....

Upchanges are fine without the clutch, downchanges you must use the clutch and blip the throttle at the same time, otherwise it can cause the rear wheel to lock up....

Jeans arent great at all, i would save the $$ and get some Cordura pants with armour in the knees, failing that some Draggin jeans for commuting in (come with kevlar in the knees, arse and hips).... Ive crashed about 8 or 9 times (sorry losing count) and have only crashed in leathers 1 piece (like the racers where, hang on.... i am a racer just a slow one lol) so i highly recommend leathers.... Leathers are better tight, as it makes you slide, rather than grip and flip you over... But most leathers arent tight...

Helmets: Buy the best you can afford, i recomment HJC as a cheap well made helmet... Only go full face, otherwise you will eat lots of bugs and you definately dont want to do a face plant at 100kmh in a open face....

Accelerator enrichment pump??? Are you talking about a fuel pump?? it will most likely be just gravity feed, as only big bikes have a fuel pump

Accelrator enrichment pump in a carby is used to give it an extra squirt of fuel to richen it up when you open the throttle fast to stop it bogging down....

My CG bogs down hard if I open the throttle too quick, I hear they do this from the factory?

    Cheers for the warm welcome!

Err, just had a good laugh. Ah no, no-get real riding gear, no-the more expensive generally are better, and no- the CG110 and enrichment should not be used in the same sentince. In fact I never have heard of a CG being used on the road at all away from a farm...
Those who insist on perfect safety, don't have the balls to live in the real world.

    hello welcome

as far as protection goes leather is the best unless you can afford a titainium armor suit. after you have see the after math of the damage to people wearing jeans you'll have a shock. Cordura are a bit better, but leather is much better.

have a look at ACC's new biker site... it has some fairly good points http://www.rideforever.co.nz

as for helmets in terms of standards... there is the DOT and SNELL M2000 standard, and it is generally accepted that SNELL is a better standard. And FFM have a SNELL M2000 stardard lid that is around 2xx. But also make sure it fits you well, so try a few differnt styles on.

    Cheers

No jeans are not sufficent, but you do what you have to do.
My titanium rod an its screws are left there to remind meto wear leather pants whenever i can.
As far as helmets go, you really dont want to step backwards once you have worn a good one, and after an accident you can see the difference in quality.
My THH was a mess......where as my Shoei XR 800 didnt even have a scratch on it and in that accident i went head first into a 4wd wheel

My advice for all it is worth:
Buy the most comfortable Helmet! Comfort is everything and if it is too noisy you can wear plugs, but you CANNOT make it more comfy.
Best place in Chch for riding gear= Leather Direct, for leather or Kevlar. I got Kevlar pants and jacket for $450. Far cheaper than any bike shop and better quality too!

    Watch for cagers and animals!
