So did I! Just rebuilt XP with a.........legal....(shudder)...copy of XPSP2Pro, which I had ..to.....pay for! After 6 weeks of crash and burn!
Seems OK now though - may have been a faulty 512 Ram

Barstards - time to try Linux!

Apparently if you install the MS spyware app they have just put out recently, it finds IE as dangerous and proceeds to remove it.

I'm not game on trying it as it will most probably implode my hdd's.

Eww! You PAID for a Microsoft product!? I feel for ya!

On the linux note, I've been meaning to install it on a partition for a long time, but my silly SATA drive is holding me back.

And about the Radeon Drivers, does anyone get their ATI folder open up on startup? I've got a 9600pro 256mb with the latest Catalyst drivers... Hmmm...

Interesting people should mention Radeon drivers.

As of 8pm last night, my laptop is now incapable of booting without hanging and restarting every time it tries to load agp440.sys (the... ATI Radeon driver!)

Googling reveals this is a common XPSP2 problem. I give up.

I'm going back to SP1 on Tuesday. It worked fine for the last few months, not a single crash.

SP2 has just eaten my entire working week.

In regards to a firefox alternate if it doesnt work, try avant. It gives explorer tabbed browsing etc, but still has a few annoyances. Just a thought.

    Or have you tried mozilla?

Sounds like some other hardware could have got stuffed when you dropped it?

edit your startup , got the latest ati drivers for 9600 etc with catalyst, no problems, a long download on dialup I might mention, damn I want broadband!!!
On the linux note, the copy of mandrake I had partioned itself without screwing up my current partitions, although it's a weighty beast in terms of space consumption, and I'm too dumb to know how to use it, should really make more of an effort I spose cos windows can be a pain sometimes.

it's official, I hate microsoft. when I first got this PC, I installed Cryhavoc's copy of XP Home, then I installed SP2 from a disk he got in the mail. it wouldn't let me disable product activation, so I had to format. lesson: avoid SP2.

things were going well, then WMP 9 thought it was due for an update to version 10, so I let it. upon rebooting (mandatory, which is strange for XP), I found that I had to activate windows or else I couldn't log in. I thought &$*&$*@$#&@$, because I couldn't even log in to recover my documents I had on C:. fortunately, it still let me log in on safe mode, so I averted disaster, and formatted once again. lesson: avoid anything even tangentially related to SP2.

that was just below the belt as I saw it, so I thought, "fuck em". I will continue never to buy a microsoft product as long as they are still being hacked. same goes for RIAA music. fuck them too; sueing users, they can die.

Havn't used IE for months, can't be bothered.

I love the "Brain injury Lawyer", I'm too lazy to clean it up though
