So, how does that work exactly? You can start the bike but it kills the ignition if you attempt to get rolling when the stand is down?

On mine you cannot start with the side stand down and if you flick the stand down while the engine is running then the engine cuts out.

mine cuts the engine when you click into gear, or put the stand down while in gear.

ive been getting into a bad habit of forgetting to lock the steering. ive also left keys in ignition, and top box keys in the top box [while travelling at 100k and not realising till ive got to where im going, and the keys are still dangling!]

mostly its either leaving glasses on head, or putting helmet on without my beanie.

    The VTR and many other bikes, if the bike is in nuetral it can be started with the side stand down... and you can let it ilde and walk away... good for warming the beast up before you jump on board and ride off into the sunset... However;

If the side stand is down and you put into gear it will cut the engine... means you can't ride away with the side stand down. Repeat the process with side side up and you ride away... tis annoying, tis handy, tis what it tis

You also can't start it with clutch in when its gear...

Thanks for the explanation - obviously this is one of the many differences between my automatic and the manual machines. I already realised that you lot didn't have a handbrake on your machines.

My last manual bike was about 20 years ago and there was no switch on the side stand back then so you could ride with it down if you were forgetful.

Hand brake... as is in front brake operated by hand, and rear brake operated by foot then yes I have a hand brake...???? and that is 99.9% of bikes?

my old XJ you couldn't start in gear with clutch in but could happily ride away with side stand down would flick up first left hand corner you can to... give you a bit of a fright with wtf was that... then you would say dumb arse... as you worked it out...

Sorry - meant it in the car sense, parking brake if you prefer.

I suppose I have 3 hand brakes - right hand side for front brakes, left hand side for rear brakes and then there is the parking brake that you can set or release. I have no foot controls at all.

Buy hot pie from Petrol station to eat at picturesque location, pop it in inside pocket to keep warm, usually traveled about 3k before I burn my left tit off.

And to round it all up nicely, because my bladder is the size of an average frozen pea, I often have the sudden and painful urge to pee whilst riding. In my haste to get quick relief I have charged behind many a bush, undone anything and everything to get at me doodah and let rip. To date I have pissed on my dangling earphones, the hot pie I mentioned earlier and of course any magazine being carried in my jacket.

Anyone want to buy a soggy steak and cheese.

If only there was a light on the instrument panel to remind you the stand was down.

Oh dear, another sad little post from the man who thinks sarcasm is wit.

I usually put the key for the TLR in my glove then shove it into the helmet, but after years of paranoia of losing a glove, I now put the key into my pocket.
The world will look up and shout "Save Us!", and I'll whisper "no"

    Hmmmm...
I thought I didn't have any dumb habits, but I do have a habit of sometimes canceling the indicators when I haven't used them, like f'rexample, when I've been around a corner where I didn't need to indicate.
Dunno that it's that dumb though. On my morning commute in my last job, the last street I went down had about 6 intersections at which I had right-of-way. One morning, I turned left onto the street as usual, then at the next three intersections I couldn't work out why the car drivers were more psycopathic than normal, and weren't giving way.
Eventually it dawned on me that I'd left the indicator on.

Since then, I make sure to cancel it, sometimes when I already have, or when I haven't used it.
    ... and that's what I think.

Ha, my cbr has a light of that desrcription, though I don't use that aswell due to forgetfullness- sort of like an indicator.

ANOTHER bad habit is when I dont flick the kill switch back on again, so I sit there at the gas station with many cages behind me forever turning the bike over wondering why nothing is happening, of course after a while I click

So is it ok to turn the bike off with only the key, neglecting the kill switch?
