Best roads to take from East Cape South

There is a guy from Alaska riding a bike around NZ.He wants to know of the best route to take from East Cape to Wellington. Best roads and Scenery. Hes on XR650 so gravel is not a problem. Cheers Toddy

A lot depends on where he has already been.

If he hasn't yet done the central North Island then a scenic option is to turn inland at Wairoa, through Waikaremoana and Murapara, then down through Taupo, either side of Ruapehu, but then down to Wanganui, and on to Wellington.

If he has already seen the Central North then just follow the main road south.
