Who used to own my VTR?

In the interests of privacy I have only used initals for surnames and left off the last letter of the plate.

Brought a VTR1000 and have pulled it to bits to have a look around and found a few things have been done to it. I'm now curious to talk to the last ownners to check if the jets have been done.

    Things I noticed..
    1) New-ish front and rear cam chain tentioners
    2) Air-box snorkle missing
    3) Paper air-filter cut out and replaced with foam (with k&n oil on it I think)
    4) Radar mount on the tripple clamp

It also has unbranded after-maket cans.
What I want to know is have the jets to done to match the "foam filter" and cans?

    Bike Details:
Plate: 20UY[not telling the last letter]
    Year: 2000
    Honda VTR1000 Firestorm
    Colour: RED

    km's 48,000ish

Ownner history... (only used an inital for last names)

    1) ME
    2) Jeffrey S 2007 Wellington
    3) Ruth M 2006, Algies Bay
    4) John T 2004, Glenfield, Auckland
    5) Red Baron New Zealand Limited 2004, Grey Lynn,
    6) Paul V 2003, Dannemora, Manukau 2016

If you know anything about this bike PM me... or reply here if you like.
I also has silver wheels and I notice almost all others have black. The country of orginal is stated as Austailia??

You could always just fork out $150 and give it a dyno run with a air/fuel reading.

Or go to www.whitepages.co.nz and track down the previous owners to find out what they know?

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

The cam tensioners on VTR's are a weak point....... just after 23 000k's and my front cam tensioner let go coming back from Paeroa. Replaced both as a pair.

The airbox... could be someone's attempt to allow the bike to breath better...

A dyno run will decide if you need to re-jet or not.

The exhausts could be Two Brothers Slip On's...... I have some and they don't always come with the TB's logo.

Once again a dyno will give some indication if the bike is running correctly or not.

If you're going to delve into the carbs watch out for the plastic choke mounting bolts.... they break real easy.

Any further probs/questions PM me for info...... or check out www.vtr1000.org/

    It used to be mine!

    OK, I 'm actually lying.
However, I did some similar mods to mine when I had it: replaced the paper in the airfilter element with foam, fitted APE manual camchain tensioners (the stock ones are crap, and despite what some people believe, there were NO "upgraded CCTs with a different colour dot" - the dot has nothing to do with the internals).
The filter-foam mod's OK, but taking the snorkel or lid off is dumb, and won't deliver any extra ponies, just noise. The airbox (apparently) uses Helmholtz resonance to deliver air in a goodly flow, and there's nothing you can do to improve it, but a lot you can do to muck it up.
In fact, short of spending HEAPS on Moriwaki cams, high-comp pistons, different carbs, etc. there's nothing you can do to get much more'n a couple of HP from the VTR motor. In any case, the engine cases can't cope with much more than 125 before they start to fail, so it's pointless.

The jets on mine had supposedly been replaced with Dynojets, or so the PO and the stickers on the frame said. However, when I had the carbs apart, the needles didn't look like the Dynojet ones are supposed to. I shimmed the needles, synched the carbs and adjusted the idle and TPS setting, and all was good.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Whats the point of the foam insert instead of the paper filter?
Better air flow? Wash it instead of replacing the paper ones (cheaper I guess)
Do I need k&n oil for it?
I think I'll make a trip to motormart.

Basically, it's just cheaper, and gives better performance (filtering wise) than alternatives such as K&N. Dunno if it flows any better'n a paper one: that depends what sort of filter oil (if any) you use.
You can use any filter oil on it, and these range between super-tacky oil that's like glue, through to lightweight conventional oil.
I've had four now - I converted the VF500 to foam, the VFR750 came with a Unifilter, the VTR I converted when the filter was dirty, and the VFR800 the same (using the left-over foam from doing the VTR).
    ... and that's what I think.
