    Two motorcyclists killed on roads

R I P to both ride. Condolance to there familys and friends.
Two motorcyclists were killed in separate incidents on the roads this weekend.

A 20-year-old woman was riding behind a ute heading north on State Highway 3 near Bulls today when, on a corner, it was struck by a car heading in the opposite direction.

Police said it appeared the car had crossed the centre line.

After hitting the ute, the car ploughed into the woman and caused a second rider to drop his bike to avoid being hit. He suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed for three hours from 12.20pm.

Around 1.30pm today, a second motorcyclist, Lance John Chalk, 34, was killed when he crashed off SH1 in Kauri, north of Whangarei.

Police said it appeared he had lost control while riding north on Snake Hill. He slid on gravel and into a culvert on the side of the road.

It's that time of year. Buckle up for the months of carnage.

My thoughts go out to the dead riders' families. Particularly since one of the crashes seems to have been a car going haywire.

Yup, its that time of year again in case we need reminding. Late October/ early November, they call it the killing season for motorbikes.

I don't know why it should be that a winter off the bike means there is a need to get it out of the shed when the weather warms up ... and thrash it.

There are also similarities with recreational pilots coming out of the woodwork at this time of the year, and alarmingly featuring VERY highly in accident statistics.
Be careful out there on the road, folks..... please!

bugger. RIP to the riders, and condolences to their families. was the road up kauri sealed? gravel is my worst nightmare... if the rider was inexperienced, i can see easily how he would lose it.

as for the car driver down turakina, i hope they face charges. theres basically no where on that road that pushes limits... its too straight and boring.

    ride safe everyone!

He binned on State Highway 1 just out of Whangarei. It's as good as any other part of State Highway 1. The road wouldn't have been the problem.

Experienced riders fuck up and die too. It's about riding within the limits, whatever those limits may be.

Indeed. Shit happens. Sometimes it happens really quickly.

Yep. But never quick enough that one doesn't have time to think "Shit!"
Very sad re the girl - wrong place, wrong time. Happens too often.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

There were two reported road fatalities during the weekend period which finished this morning – both motorcyclists.

Police said the first crash occurred as a woman motorcyclist was following a ute on State Highway 3 near Bulls about midday yesterday.

The ute collided with an oncoming car, which then ploughed into the motorcyclist.

A second motorcyclist following the ute also crashed escaping with minor injuries.

Police said it appeared the car crossed the centreline.

Soon afterwards, 34-year-old Lance John Chalk was killed in Northland.

Police said it appeared he lost control while riding his motorbike on SH1 at Kauri, north of Whangarei, sliding on gravel and hitting a culvert on the side of the road.

You see it all the time whilst out riding, bloody cagers crossing that centre line especially around twisty roads. They think the roads are built purely for them. RIP to those 2 riders who lost their lives on the weekend and condolences to family and friends. Yes the silly season is upon us but not all motorcycle accidents are due to motorcyclists going too fast or not knowing the road and road conditions they are travelling on. All anyone can say is take it easy out there and ride safe and always have your witts about you when riding on any road you have never been on before. Safe Motorcycling Everyone and stay safe this Summer.

There's just as many motorcyclists that cross the centreline as there are car drivers doing it.

Not from inattention though. I'll give you the 'deliberately' and 'oh shit' ones, however.

Yep seeing more bikers in the Orthopaedic ward lately. Some it has been their fault, some have not. Still look after them the same and still go riding myself. It is part of the choice I have to make every-time I hop on the bike.
Funny thing is a lot of Cage drivers forget that they are also taking a risk when they go for a drive. Life is risk. Ya can't live without taking some degree of it.

    My condolences to their familys.
