...pillion virginity that is!
After a most excellent day out at the WIMA ride and raising shitloads of cash for an absolutely worthwhile cause, I rode home, caught up with the wife and kids at the local park, played on the swings (and so did the kids) then shot home for a well deserved ginger beer.
SWMBO came home with the sprogs, then after depositing the spawn with me, popped up the road to do some retail therapy.
An hour or so later she was back.
I jokingly suggested she throw my corduras and spare helmet on, and that I'd take her for a spin - well bugger me with a pitchfork, she geared up!
Now, aside from our 6 year old going up and down the drive with me, I had never carried a pillion before, so I was a bit hesitant, but I'm sick of going to rides and leaving her at home, so bugger it I decided to have a go!
Well, the ride down the drive was a bit wobbly getting past the cars, but once we were out on our street I started getting the balance right and things were beginning to gel quite quickly so I headed off on a track I had decided would encompass several various areas of riding - suburban, open road and semi-rural.
Long story short...
I was aware of her hands hanging on securely for the first five minutes as we headed out toward Hunua Rd. When we hit the 70km/h zone and I rolled a bit more throttle on there was a definite increase of pressure, but the agreed "STOP!" signal was not given, so I carried on.
We headed toward Red Hill, and as we rounded onto the steep uphill section, I realised I could no longer feel her hands, nor could I see the shadow of two on the road due to the sun being behind us!
EEP!
I patted down my side, ever hopeful her insurance was paid up... errr, I mean that she was still there - thank god (dinner wasn't cooked yet) I found a hand, and patted it feeling very relieved...
Anyhoo, 5 minutes of pootling later and we were home.
Mrs Donor got her helmet off, and underneath was a huge grin... and I was/am stoked!
The thought of being able to share my bike with her is bloody awesome, I've wanted to be able to take her for a ride on the bike since I got the thing almost a year ago. So roll on the toy run I say - huzzah! (Though there will be mucho practice and short rides including motorway riding beforehand - one success does not an epic win make.)
I have to say, she is a natural on the back, no death grip, no natural tendency to try and lean against the turn and above all she feels great pressed against me...
...oh... and apparently I have to take her somewhere quiet so she can practice riding...
...errr... say what???![]()
