    Motorcycle parking in Wellington?

I'm sure I'm not the first to look at this. But with the scooterazzi snatching more than their share of free bike parking, drastic measures need to be taken.

The property owners for the place I work (State Tower) have become fed-up with CEOs and other ilk whinging about bikes parking alonside their Mercs and have now slapped a blanket ban on bike parking outside of designated parking areas. However, there may be a few spaces going for rent at $4420 +gst/year (yeah right!). Simple calcs suggest that if 4 bikes share a spot the costs would be not much more than 20 bucks/week for secure, underground parking accessible 24x7. I might be keen in looking further into this if there's any other interest.

Alternatively, does anyone have or is interested in co-sharing a rented secure parking space in Wellington CBD?

Buy a bike that can fit into a lift...
    Park it in your office.

The state tower landlord is dumb. Why don't they sell the nooks and crannies in B2 for motorcycle parking and get extra revenue!

I think my only solution will be to get in earlier to secure a park... or not bring it in at all when the wind is really bad to avoid tipsy damage.

I investigated some parking in Welly when I bought my new bike. A couple of things:

    - Parking building owners won't give motorcyclists swipe card access. When I asked why, the guy I spoke to (from Tournament parking) said the landlords don't permit it and offered some other lame excuse about being able to slip a car in if you have a card that will raise the arm, but you're only paying for a bike. Specifically this was referring to the Courtenay Central carpark but I hear others are the same. They will happily take your money off you, but you'll have to go around the barriers to get into the car park. It also seemed as though I wouldn't have any come back if the owners decided to block the ability to go around the entry gates.

    - The above being the case, you might find it hard to get two access cards for one car park (if you were planning to park two bikes there). Excellent idea but there's probably a few hurdles to climb first.

The guy from Tournament was incredibly unfriendly.

    Good points raised.

In my particular circumstance, I do have a swipe card for after-hours work and on-calls, but this may be a challenge for most. I'd say only about a dozen or so of us are affected by this here and most others, I suspect, were just simply dodging the barriers. After-hours work no problem-I'll just park in one of the company's rented spots.

Due to the limited public transport timetable (1 train service a day) from where i live to the city, if I can't make this then it's the bike 100kms to work and 100kms back. I suppose no real issue with parking if I leave early enough or weather's crap, but a bit annoying if weather's nice and leaving "early enough" is around 06:30 to get to the CBD by 08:00 at the latest.

I have since found that there seem to be a couple of Wilson Car Parks nearby that do allow bikes. The Plimmer Towers and Queens Wharf both allow undercover bike parking for $3/day- states so on their website anyway. Don't know what sort of capacity they have though. I'm unsure what the policies of the other car parking companies are, but I suspect very few would allow bikes. Maybe someone with experience in this area could clarify for the benefit of others.

I used to park my bike on B3 in the tower, just left of the walk way when entering the floor from the lifts. A while ago a note was left on my bike saying they didn't want me to park there as car drivers were worried they would damage my bike *Tui moment* So I havent parked there for a while now.

I also had rode down the ramp early one morning when the door was down, swiped my card and the door wouldn't go up. Called the security guy on the intercom and he said they were having problems, I needed to back up and go down the exit ramp instead. He could see me on his video camera, and thought I could simply reverse back up the ramp *another Tui moment*

    Just thinkin.....

According to LTSA all motorcycles are motorcycles, but apparently not all scooters are considered motorcycles. Does this mean that some scooters that fall under the definition of 'mopeds' should not be able to park in Motorcycle Only areas?
