Why isn't crime an election issue?

There are heaps of bikes being stolen.

I did a search on the word "stolen" after reading Rossi Gals post and got 1891 hits. Now assuming that KBers are good at spelun....

I got burgled last month and did a quick poll around the office EVERY person I asked had been a victim of crime in the last 5 years. Mostly theft, breaking stuff and vandals. There was no violent crime. In the 80s I had a bike stolen, I've had cars broken into and things like letter boxes smashed.

So is crime now so prevalent that we are just accepting it?

I'm thinking about who I'm voting for.

Remember we are sopose to be a tree hugging green loving country.
We have factories pooring waste into our rivers. local govts dont want to know as 9 times out of 10 the owners are on the commity.
The usal story here in Gods Zone.... If you can hide it. Dont worry.
Our laws are to relaxed. goes more in favor of the accused then the victum.
    Our life story,

Because the economy might be going to hell in a hand basket. People are worried if they will have a job next week.

Three strikes and you're out. It isn't rocket science. You get fair warning too.

How can you not understand that? Any criminal offence counts as one. Get caught shoplifting 3 times and you are off to pokey. For a long time. Simple.
And if you think theft is 'small', tell that to those on here etc who have had their bikes taken.
Sure, it's relatively harmless compared to murder, but remember that most of the 'big' crimes are committed by those that started out with a bit of harmless tagging, shoplifting, taking stereos from cars...that sort of thing.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

firstly i've only heard about it so i wasn't sure what it was about or how serious the crime had to be- but ive just read the artical in the rag . hopefully its not just another bullshit election promise. what age do the strikes start, do they carry over from youth?

`secondly i'm one of those on here who have had there bike stolen-house burgled so i do know what its like, but i'm not going to treat the common thief like a murderer i'll beat the shit out of him with a bat but i wont put him in the same class as a murderer.

I remember hearing about National's policy regarding early-intervention, harsher penalties, life means life, and so on.

On the other extremes, there is a Legalise Canabis party that plans to reduce crime by legalising a portion of it, thereby making what counts as crimes a bit less. I reckon they have some loose screws in their heads.

Meanwhile, on the current front, there was a dairy shop near my home that just got burgled late last week and the owner got stabbed. Lucky she didn't die.

Crime isn't more prevalent. If someone stole your bike when I was a kid and you didn't organise a gang of mates to go and get it back then you didn't deserve it in the first place and the old man gave you the bash for wimping out.

You sure as hell didn't whine to the cops about it, because they'd give you the bash for wasting their time. The focus on crime has shifted to include the formerly socially acceptable crimes of violence against children, old people, and retailers. Oh, and chicks wearing practically nothing.

I sure as hell hope we don't end up a little Britain with one CCTV camera for every rubbish bin. Be careful what you ask for.

Finding a 'system' that works is not easy. Mayor Guiliano's Broken Windows policies seemed to work well, in that serious crime dropped off quite dramatically after it was implemented. I don't know what the downside was though...there was bound to be one.

The book Freakanomics uses statistics to argue that the drop in new yorks crime rate during Gulliani's term was actually due to the police hiring binge his predecessor implemented as part of his electioneering campaign......

More cops on the street = more bad guys arrested and more care taken during arrests = more likely conviction.

    Worth a read....

I really honestly think that the SAS/army needs to be brought to arms and to use the gang 'strongholds' as training. They are effectively terrorising us, yet the government isn't willing to take a REAL stand against it.

I'd like to see how hard the Killer Beez etc think they are when 20+ SAS dudes show up at thier door.

    Further more on this..

Now for some stupid reason ( sorry pot smokers ) this has become a socially accepted drug why?? Now Alcohol and Tobacco are already legal why make another harmful substance legal to?
I started trying cigarettes at around 6-7 years old stealing them from my aunties and uncles.. now would you want a 6-7 year old kid trying weed?

yes damn straight they have a bloody screw loose I think its absolutly stupid,

For medical reasons perhaps but I think it has to be proven a bit more that it is working for the person involved.

Maybe KB should start a political party ;-) - now that would never work .
