Passing on the Left is legal

    Provided

You can only pass on the left when:

there are two or more lanes on your side of the centre line, and you are able to pass safely by using the left-hand lane
you are directed to by a police officer
     the vehicle you are passing:

     has stopped, or
is signalling a right turn, or
     is turning right
From NZ road code APril 2003

And the shoulder is NOT another Lane!

How does this apply to the bus lanes in Auckland?

Think I will carry the latest Road Code around with me to check what the officer says to me.

My old road code from the 80's mind stated that you could also pass on the left if you were turning left or if the traffic was stopped or travelling so slow as to be effectively stopped. My how times change.

Hell I even took advantage of this rule during my cage test!

the "pass on left" rule only applies if you are in a different lane to the other vehicle.
you can only pass a veficle in the same lane on the right (provided you stay within the lane)
