Thinking of heading over there from Auckland for a weekend. Any tips on the best route, either southern motorway or Maratai, Kaiaua way?

If you have time go whitford, kawakawa bay and kaiaua then on through miranda to kopu, then the coro that is a full day loop. If not then sh1, then 2 then miranda then kopu or straight to kopu from the sh1,2.

Top up petrol at kopu and coromandeltownship. Enjoy the views and feel free to stop lots, there is plenty of twisties so you don't ave to worry about missing out on any.

I recommend coroglenn for a brilliant scollop burger and a ice cold ginger beer for lunch.

And take it easy, a lot of corners are brilliantly paved but still tight, some are deceptively tight. The vl has good ground clearnece for a cruiser but through experimentation I have found that vls still scrape quickly so would best ridden at not double and plus ten over the recommended corner limits.

If you've never been...be wary of the road works around the entire peninsula. They are signposted, but all the same...be wary.

Go down the Maraetai, Clevedon, Miranda coast, it's a neat road and good varied riding, once at Coromandel ride which ever way you want but consider following the coast down to Whangamata and then back thru the gorge, Paeroa on the way back.
If you feel like it, take the gravel road north from Colville to Port Jackson, it's all coastal and easy riding but geting to the tip of the peninsula and looking across to Great Barrier is worth the hour or so of nervous gravel tettering. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and it was hard packed and fast with only the odd bit of new / deep gravel in potholes.
Just a note of caution, there is stock wandering around some roads and the other road users seem to expect to have the use of the full width of the road so ride defensively.

If you ride kawakawa bay to kopu make sure to keep well in your lane along the coastal road just after the 10 mins of hills before it. Just about got clipped by a carravan last 2 time i rode it. Not his fault but the roads are narrow and there are quite often hill slips and is almost always a bit of clay on the road so be carefull.

The best local roads close to Orks is along Clevedon to kawakawa Bay, through the Orere point gorge (oh yeah!!!) towards Kaiaua, head towards Miranda but avoid the boring straights and go along the Old Miranda road that follos the foothills. After long straights along the coast after you leave Kaiaua you will go over a bridge and turn left to Miranda, then make sure you take the first right turnoff heading to Miranda after the next bridge. This take you out at the Corogate Cafe which has awesome food with everything on it

Head towards Kopu on the boring bits and you can opt to turn left or right depending on how you want to do the loop. Do not get gas in Coromandel township unless you want to pay 20cents more a litre. Thieves!

Top up at Kopu or Thames if you go Clockwise and then again at Whitianga or Tairua.
