Options for deterring thieving bastards from getting your bike

Okay, so it appears there are loads of bikes being flogged at present or at least the bottom-dwelling scums are attempting to flog them. They’re probably stealing them to order, too.

If someone really wants your bike, they will have it irrespective of what you do to try and protect it. Flash security systems, hidden rooms, and bolting it to the floor aren’t going to stop anyone from taking it. Realistically, they’ll set off your alarm and manage to disappear by the time anyone can react. And your beloved bike will be gone with them.

All we can do is try to make it harder for the aforementioned scum to take our babies. Hence, I thought it might be a good idea to list some of the things we can do to make our bikes harder to steal from our garages.

Although they’re not as extravagant as erecting artificial walls and locking your bike inside a metal case concreted to the floor, I’ve thought of these options:
    • Removing your keys from the ignition (even in the garage) and hiding both sets in places that aren’t obvious. Your beside cabinet and top drawer will be checked by thieves.
    • Keeping your two keys separate. Thiefs may not look for the second key once they’ve found the first one. At least having one original key would allow you to reprogram your old/replacement key without needing a whole new ignition.
    • Storing the bike in a secure building, even if you’re going out again later.
    • Talking to your neighbours and letting them know when your bike is likely to be ridden. Your neighbours will already know the sound of your bike and they may be able to act if they hear it being started outside of its normal pattern.
    • Closing your garage door if it faces towards the street, or getting curtains if you don’t want people checking out the contents of your garage.
    • Using your steering lock. Breaking the steering lock will slow the thiefs down by a few seconds or make it awkward for them to manouvre your bike.
    • Storing your bike at a different location to what’s in your registration details. Obviously not an option for every day riders!
    • Increasing the security in your garage/house to make it harder to break into. Obviously houses are made of smashable glass but you can try to deter them!

I know this stuff seems so obvious, but honestly, how many of you store valuable items in your drawers?

Feel free to add anything that I may have missed.

We bought a alarm system that txts your cell phone when it is activated then 30 seconds later calls you & you can listen through the alarm if anyone is in your house.
Have had it go off twice once from a sparrow Then from a curtain blowing in the wind from a open window. I was home within 10 minutes of it going off.

The system was $1000 & all you have to do is keep the sim card topped up.
You can programme as many cell phone numbers as you want in alarm.

You could go the Datadots route - a powder you coat the bike in where every little grain has a microscopic serial number. Can't be removed so the bike or any of its parts are traceable and labels declaring Datadots are all over the bike should be enough to put off professional thieves. Best thing is having spent the $150 your insurance ought to offer Zero Excess if the bike then gets nicked and you haven't just left it hanging around outside your house.

    Good info thanks!

I got a curtain up on our garage pretty quickly when the neighbour came over to look for a ball, and said "got a new bike huh?" as he saw the bike in the garage through the uncovered window.
One of the best ways of preventing it stolen from your home is not letting people know it even there.

My mummy parked a lot further to the left today because I was coming back from work. Bless her
But still, I wouldn't wanna push her up there quietly
I'd record a sound clip of me opening my garage, but that's a bit much. It rests on the ground, and drags on concrete for maybe 20cm before it lifts.

Then if they start it, they're gone in 3 sec flat anyway. BUT!!!

Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.
